Yes, the balance of power has never been static through history. Will this really give China the upper hand? Hard to say, really. You know what you read, but you don't know how much of what you read is absolutely correct and if the US had an effective countermeasure for that missile, it is, as should be expected, top secret.

I don't think US relations with China are in particularly bad shape and I think the likelihood of an even closer partnership is much more likely than the the possibility of us being at war with each other in the foreseeable future. Taiwain, however, has been a big sensitive spot in US/China relations and I don't think that's going to change soon, either.

China leaked the news about their missile. We are now in the position of evaluating whether it's a threat or a bluff. And we're also in the position of deciding what, if anything, we want to reveal about countermeasures. Global political poker playing, as usual the way I see it.

As usual, some country in the world finds the need to bang the drum and flex their muscles, with some poor country (Taiwan in this case), stuck in the firing line.

Pure pontification from the side of China.roll eyes

North Korea is a bit of a problem, but as nuts as Kim Jong Il appears to be, he doesn't seem to be nuts enough do something as stupid as declaring war on the US. I don't expect anything out of North Korea except saber rattling until the country either revolts against him (lots of North Korean sentiment for that) or he kicks the bucket.

I saw this on another forum and I kinda think this guy has a very good point. I do not think they are not building a navy for defensive purposes alone...

"The Chinese are building a naval force and it definitely is a lot more then needed for defense. They have a ways to go yet to match the size of the American surface fleet, but they are going that way.
Ultimately, there will be a war written into the future and we "may" give as good as we get, but what we get is not going to be good and at the rate they are going we are going to receive more then we can give...
The Chinese are no longer producing junk...and we are going to get our asses kicked hard. Pull your heads out and be aware of what is happening.

"In November 2006, a Chinese home-built Song-class diesel submarine suddenly surfaced, undetected, in the middle of a US battle group off Japan. It was a clear warning that its naval weakness could not be taken for granted."

They have more then one underground base.

The American 688 attack class boat crews did an outstanding job tracking the Russian subs when the soviets were the only threat they faced. They are still going to do an excellent job tracking the Chinese subs when they can find them and that part of the game is changing as new designs are built. The Russian subs were noisey nuclear subs, where the "new" Chinese subs are quiet diesel/electrics. It will not be too long before the Chinese start building nuclear powered subs and they may be as easy to track as the Russian were or they may not be.
Consider that the South Korean warship was just sunk without warning.
The South Korean military are not sleeping when they are on the job.
They are in fact very, very good. (I would not place a bet on the outcome of a ROK Army unit fighting an American unit.) They know what they are up against, but they got hit nonetheless.

This new Chinese missile being built is definitely something to be worried about. It may not be perfected right now, but it will be at some point and to think it is a piece of Chinese junk is foolish."

Nothing to be concerned about as this stuff has been going on for decades. Picture it like a bunch of guys going off to the bar on a Friday night;

They all know each other and show up in their cars, some hot, some not. Some have hot 4 X 4s at home that they only bring out to race, others have bikes that they don't bring to the bar. Some are looking for girls and stay sober, others look for a drink and muscle each other at the bar trying to get first in place, muscling but, nobody starts a fight as that would spell the end of the night. Some owe the other guy money and certainly are not going to fight over a drink or a girl so, they just jokey for position in all areas.

They got a carrier from 900 miles? We got 'em from space - from the docks, from the factory, from their hometown and, at worst, we can do something really really dirty that would destroy them - give open access to the internet.

One last point on this worthless rant of mine;

To all those that believe Israel has no worth - should she stop allowing the US access to her port in Haifa for her carriers and then, sell same to China - you would see a revolution in this world that has no compare.

Any money the US provides to Israel is chump change compared to the problematic repercussions if Israel gave her friendship to another country.

Well said. International polics is complicated enough that ill informed people can argue tangents and pick sides for their entire lives without ever knowing what was really going on or why.

So does this mean the US is going to invade China? Oh, wait, I forgot: the US only invades countries that don't have Weapons of Mass Destruction (e.g. Iraq). They never attack anyone who can fight back unless attacked first.

In related news, the recent declaration against cluster bombs (which are WMDs, meant to target civilians) was signed by nearly 200 countries. However, the countries which refused to sign the deal were the major manufacturers and users of such WMDs - specifically, the US, Russia, Israel, China and a few others.

Why on earth would you extrapolate that idiocy from a discussion about a new weapon?
