do you, would you, travel alone on holiday?

I have spent a lot of this summer travelling alone and I have mixed feelings about it. There is an Italian saying that suggests it is better to be alone than to be badly accompanied, which I think is largely true .. I remember going to the Lake District in the UK during the time my wife and I were splitting up and it was horrendous, for obvious reasons .. but holidaying alone can never really be as good as going with friends or family, can it?

I'd love to know your experience and feelings on the matter.

I’m planning to go on holiday: it’s Turkey, there I have no acquaintances and I don’t know a word in their language, and I’ll go without any company. So it will be holidaying alone. Which, I’m convinced, is much better than holidaying together with someone you don’t like. And which, of course, is worst than holidaying with someone you do like. But I’ve ordered a couple of books of Ben Elton so chances are I won’t pine for company too desperately. Sun, sea and a good book… I’m going to manage just fine… or at least that’s the plan A.

I think you have a key there .. if you're travelling alone maybe it's better to plan to do something specific. Maybe even go on an art, music or language course or something similar .. the problem then might be that people not alone might invite you to their table soley because you're alone - which I personally would hate. In the end, on my holiday, I spent time collecting material for some travel blogs because I enjoy writing and also my experience might help others enjoy their holiday more.

Good idea mate. I've travelled tons on my own over the years so if there's a question I can answer then feel free to ask. cheers

I'm very interested in knowing, when you travel alone, what kind of accommodation you usually stay in .. and also any tips you might have built up specifically for lone travellers. I'm looking for information I can include in a blog about travelling/holidaying alone.

I hope you have a great time - and none of those pesky jellyfish you have at home .. in what kind of accommodation are you staying?

Going to stay at a hotel, and there’s meant to be a swimming pool, without jelly-fish I hope. But all this is planned for September… meanwhile it’s cold and grey and rainy here…

Hostels and b&b's usually. N America though I would strongly not recommend hostels for the most part as they're toilets! Well judging by the one's I've been in and hearing many similar stories from other travellers. If it's a warm place and the right time of year then camp grounds can be good for a while. I'll think up some tips over the weekend, but number one is, if you need to find out some info on the local area, simply find the first decent looking bar and chat with the bartender!! Always number one thing to do no matter where you are as you won't get the tourist BS, you'll get to talk to regular Joe's with all the knowledge you need. Could even save you a packet in the long run! cheers

I have not had a holiday as such on my own but have stayed a couple of nights, in hotels or B and B's for short breaks. I would not do any sightseeing on my own, I had a bad experience in Barcelona a few years ago. Now I enjoy just relaxing around hotel or B and B with a book and a drink.

Although I live alone I do enjoy getting away from the house, phone, pc etc. for a short break on my own. Recharge the batteries.

A friend of mine has travelled twice to India, on her own staying a month, both times . She loved it and is planning a third trip. Not sure I am that brave.

How true, I went through a similar experience with my ex husband. It is soooooo much better to travel alone than with the wrong person. It is hard, but I enjoy my own company. Next year I intend to go to Dublin on my own...
