If you get a job you will be gone for longer hours than you would be in College.

In the present climate I would say that if you have a chance to go on in College go for it, who knows how long it would take you to find a job.

Don't give up on the college idea is there child care expenses available any where, financial support or you studying in the north or south, never give up without trying every avenue, i know what you are going through I did same thing myself kids are fine and am now doing post grad. Worth it anniebaby so take your time on this one before you make a decision. teddybear

Annie, a very good and close friend of mine has been faced with a similar decision every year for the past 7 years. She went back to do her Leaving Cert then. And each year as financial pressure increased the cost of fees made life more and more difficult. But she got her leaving, went on to college, and 2 months ago got her H Dip. Last week she was interviewed for a teaching job which she got and began this morning. There is no person I more admire in this world for what she has achieved. There is light at the end of the tunnel, don't give up.

hi,
you'll find a way..don't worry..i did my degree via distance education while working full time(don't know if that's a possibility for you). When i found no job for 6months after moving to galway from dublin I volunteered and a few months later found something paid..sometimes things work out in the strangest ways..get out there, ask and ask again for what YOU want..it might not happen in the way or timeframe you want it but it will happen if you want it..good luck and let me know!x,ronah

Listen to your instinct and follow the dream anniebaby, you have one life and you deserve a good life. Believe me it is hard and tough with little money but it is worth it when you there and achieving your dream and the future holds no limits. The little one will be fine, because when your with her it is quality time and you are happy and showing her that anything in life is possible. Sorry anniebaby but I am passionate about young women like you going for it, I have never looked back and am still going for it. dancing teddybear

another possibility is getting on a CE scheme if you are entitled to it..a lone parent(am one myself) has to be unemployed for 18 months,i think or in receipt of a social welfare allowance..check the details..i did that and have already gone for one internal interview, didn't get it but will go for another if it turns up..You are entitled to training allowance on a CE scheme(500euro a year)

My friend is now 44, had separated and was getting no money from the ex. At time she had to resort to burning telephone books and old shoes and runners for heat during the winter. And this at the height of the Celtic Tiger! Its about getting and making it happen for yourself and not be hoping for help. With the state of the economy that help is unlikely to come but you and you alone can make it happen...

When I decided to do an honours degree I went the part time route with the Open University as at the time I was working. ( a time when jobs actually existed laugh )

Since then I have complete an honours science degree, science masters and now I am studying an honours engineering degree.

There are costs involved but it saves on traveling costs, child care costs and if you are lucky enough to get a job in the meantime you can still keep on studying and working.

It does take longer, and can be a bit lonely sometimes, with no face to face social interaction. But I believe these are cancelled out by the flexibility of study
