following EU politics is not really important in the Netherlands.

it all changed when Barry Madlener from the PVV went to Brussels.
dutch people became more aware and I noticed european politics are more spoken of in the streets.

especially now, when sarkozy and france are under attack due to the Roma affaire. yesterday, a whole news item was broadcasted about Roma in the Netherlands. left wing people are starting to get worried about dutch Roma. it was something that was not on the agenda for a long time.
but since the right wing is gaining ground, and it seems like PVV from Wilders is going to have a great say in the parliament, problems with Roma can now be mentioned.

I follow political forums and I see a lot of the Dutch are behind Sarkozy. they feel a connection with the french because only the netherlands and france said no to a european constitutional law.

pvv and Madlener are in Brussels to try to prevent a too big european influence.

what do you think about all this?

personally, I'm with Sarkozy on this and I think Europe influence is getting too big.

Its beyond your understanding, thats o.k, but certainly no need to to be insulting! It will be a democracy, any person can rule, you know that, vote in a govern. Its likely to happen, not anytime soon, but im sure it will. We already have a single currency, your grandfather may have heard that all those years ago and probably said something similar to what you said to me!!!!! But its happened.

Its not me not smelling roses, its an idea! The states used to be little countries, now its the united states of america, do the same to europe, and hopefully it will.

Of course much harder because of cultural loss, and good fellows such as yourself and green beard not agreeing with an idealism! Thats your generation, but the new generations to come may find Europe a better place unted as 1?!

I look forward to the years to come as Europe looks forward, and leaving behind those who look behind, like you, and green beard!!!!

Have a nice day.

what u dont realise is that this will then become the united states of europe, with one controlling body, while to u this may sound good and dandy, share the wealth, resources, etc, to me is sounds like a very very bad idea, as said this will push us ever closer to the NWO which is something i am totally against, personally i like my freedom, as much of it as i have, to be under one government will reduce this.

Again we are all entitled to our opinions, personally i think yours is wrong but thats your right to have one, as is mine, tomorrow when we have less rights, and are told what to do i hope you are happy with the dream grin

Loss of rights and freedom is a natural instinct, especially when faced with change (s). It is our immediate fear, which is why there is fear and doubt with change in hand.

We will never lose our rights and freedom, it just cant be ruled into the factors....

With unity there will also be more freedoms, and more rights. It will benefit Europeans who are less fortunate than Western Europeans, spreading wealth, prosperity, security, health and education. This is what Europe, as a bigger picture, wants....

The next big step in Europe is to convert the U.K to the Euro dollar, imagine the Commonwealth and FTSE 100 using the Euro... Yes, it will be very problomatic for British economics, but eventually there will be an ironing of the creases!

After, you have no convertions via London, simplifing matters more so.....

Even Scandinavia using the Euro..... In short, the more the better, for all...

I think a Europe in which a Head of State could do as he/she likes without being challenged in any way would be a less safe, less stable world. So in that sense I am pro EU.

As for the hapless benighted Roma, I don't have the answer. Most of the deported Roma are already walking back to France... and those French nationals who have been thrown out of illegal camps are simply setting up new camps elsewhere.

Why? Because they have no other option.

Collectivism is going to destroy Europe in the same way it destroyed the Eastern-Block!

You'll have to keep on bailing out different EU-States!

OP - are you in favour of limiting freedom of movement within EU member states for all members or just certain minorities? On what grounds do you think Sarkozy's actions are justified?

And why do you consider the formation of an EU-wide constitution to be detrimental to Dutch interest?

It’s election to the Swedish parliament this weekend, and consequently we were enjoying a lot of information on the subject. Impossible to say who it would be, but my impression is that sympathy to Nationalist party is strongly than ever. Isn’t it a general tendency for the current Europe?

I don’t want to sound as Cassandra, but as I see it if Europe would unite, it’ll be not for something, but against…someone. (And when extremists get together, the question about rights becomes hypothetical, I’m afraid…)

I doubt that anyone could be enamoured by the common notion of such an overbureaucratic, undemocratic, self-serving, elitist-run, opinion-ignoring self-serving institution as the EU Central Government .. but I also believe that something needs to be done about certain issues that individual countries will find difficult, if not impossible, to combat in isolation - for instance, matters such as climate change, energy dependency on Russia, economic competition from East Asia and international terrorism, to mention a few recently stated in the Observer newspaper.

There has to be a way to unite in which member citizens don't feel their basic democratic rights are being usurped. Hopefully Ireland's refusal to sign the Lisbon treaty and France's and Holland's earlier refusal to adopt the constitution have together sent Brussels a clear message that governments exist to serve the electorate. And that we can then find a way to move forward on that basis.

However, I can't agree that Sarkozy's actions were in any way beneficial to anyone concerned. Expelling 900 Roma from French soil on the grounds that some of them might possibly be criminals is sheer unadulterated rascism.

Bicycles instead of cars and we will improve environment and reduce dependency on Russian fuel in one move!

Is there any prize for elegant solutions?
