I've started getting mail from myself that I haven't written where it is showing my address as the sender. I haven't opened any of them as I know it's from some place I don't want to go. Has anyone else started getting emails from their own address?

Funny you should say that. I got one on my main AOL email account from me to me, spamming for some computer company a couple of weeks ago.
I absolutely freaked out and thought that someone had hacked into my email account where I have info that is confidential.
I rang AOL who said it was possible that someone could have hacked in and they asked me to do a Malware scan, Spybot scan and AVG scan all of which I had already installed on my pc. AOL also asked me to change my password that logs me in to my account.

yahoo is hacked from time to time. My friends send me messages containing links to some online ads and they don't know about it.

Nope.I've had the reverse happen and had to change email providers.

There is a movement, especially in USA by the FBI and CIA to look directly into our emails because of 911.
The solution is simple. Change your email address and they can't trace you.
We are also better off to have a landline connection rather than to broadcast our conversations by wireless.
DO NOT open emails unless you are sure of the sender. This is how computer viruses are transmitted.
Personally, I have an unlisted phone number that scammers still get into. Always use an answering machine and don't answer the phone live. Listen to the message of who is calling first...and then you can pick-up and talk to them in the middle of the message.
I was scammed a couple of months ago. I purchased a bumper sticker for my car. I had to give them my email address to complete the transaction. A couple of weeks later, my Bank called me. What these scammers had done was to reverse the letters of my email address to take money out of my Bank Account.
My Bank caught this transaction in time. It came out of Miami, Florida.
There is not much that we can do other than to make sure that you have insurance with the Bank. It is too costly to prosecute them, because they will change their own email address, which becomes untraceable.

In the USA, we have FIDC insurance that protects the US Banks from fraud by scammers. This is mostly automatic, but some Banks require a signature agreement.
