I do agree with your statement, but makes us think that a civilization so advanced would want to be friends with barbarians such as us? Would we want to be friends with a less advanced civilization or would we want to conquer them?

If indeed they do exist, why would they attempt to make contact with us??? We are probably far too primitive and hostile at this stage of our evolution...

I expect to be flamed by a lot if not all of you for what I am going to say, but I believe it is another civilisation's way of alerting us to the fact that nuclear war is not to be started.
They don't show themselves to us, and just their spacecraft because they know we are too primitive to cope with them, or words to that effect.
It is possible too that they are similar to angels as there have been witness testimonies to that effect, although I am open-minded about that.
I do believe though that there is a chance of other civilisations around, given the fact that the universe is infinite in distance.

Exactly why they don't visit us. They can see that we are not evolved enough to embrace them with love and understanding since we can't even do that with our fellow brothers and sisters on this planet. Plus, this is a step-by-step process of discovery. Meaning that there is a natural build up for us to go through, so when we do find out that there are indeed other ET's out there, we will be ready and not encounter psychological shock.
