Your IP address is a number that your internet service provider assigns to your computer while you are online.

IP addresses can be resolved to an approximate geographical location using one of the many location services available, such as

The IP address of a user is always known to the web server that hosts the site you're visiting.

So, if CS would show the IP address of every user, in places like their profiles, mail messages, forum posts, etc., it would be very quick and simple to weed out most scumbags.
The good people would have nothing to hide, and the scammers would have nowhere to hide.

This is not foolproof because a tech savvy scammer can use a fake IP address, but doing requires advanced technical knowledge so 90% of them would be exposed immediately.

I am sending the suggestion to CS. If you agree, you can also write to CS asking them to show IP addresses, or post in this thread.

I have no idea about the technical side of this, but are you really that afraid of scammers, that you have to give big brother a helping hand?? WTF???

We might as well post our full names, dates of birth, addresses, social security numbers etc, cos us good folks have nothing to hide, right?? doh

I think what he means is.... is all a bit much to avoid a scammer... when a simple * delete* does the same trick

It is like asking for a key for him to hack your computer

I never seen this done so boldly. And yes, there is locaters for IPs. used to use them as a mod at a forum. Kind of purposeless when everyone has their location in their profile.....so that leaves....

It seems like I've heard that before.
It sounds like double speak.

We give up privacy; and, only the best scammers can have access to our personal information?

JMH and Invincible:
My IP adress is 79.45.107.91
Go on, hack me. laugh

It's not that easy to break into someone's computer just by knowing the IP address, and if that's your concern then you could hide the last block and it would still be useful for geolocation, for example 79.45.107.XXX

Alternatively, CS could also do the IP-to-location lookup themselves and show just the name of the country the poster is connecting from.

I do not wish to have this information from you, and I do not wish to reciprocate, even if I knew where to find it.

I'm sorry, but I think this is a ridiculous and utterly paranoid idea. frustrated

Hiding an IP adress is not simple, believe me. Those programs are most likely spyware.
If you send data out with a fake address then the return data will also be sent to that fake address, so it is useless for two-way communication between a user's computer and a web server.

Altering your IP adress is only useful to send spam mail for which you don't expect a reply from the recipient's server.

I wonder if that's why scammers give us another email address right away?

No I do not agree with your proposal and most certainly do not think CS will either.

The information people give here online in their profile is enough.

Do not be fooled, many scammers are technically advanced and use the software to hide IP addresses, do not be fooled into thinking that they are anything less.
