Canada is known as a "peacekeeping" country...like the Swiss...does that mean we should never take a stand then??

I guess it depends on what the "right thing" is.
I suppose if a leader takes a stand to do what they feel is the
right thing for their nation in the face of world opinion this makes them a strong leader. The 2 are almost interchangable.

What is democratic about being told we are a peacekeeper and therefore we will take neither side?

to draw a distinction:
in order to be a peace keeper, there needs to be a peace to keep.
Right now, although things are FAR better than they were, there is
not yet peace in afganistan, so right now, you are peace MAKERS...
I for one applaud your nation for taking a stand and doing what it
(and i) feel is the right thing for your future benifit and indeed
the long term benifit of the world at large

Sorry but your question doesnt make sence, ive not said we would sit on the fence and watch from afar, and ive not said we would rush in gun ho. If the topic relates to the war in the east and all related terrorism acts both here and abroad then yes, we in this country have made a stand against terrorism for many decades, and it will probably go on for many decades if not centuries to come as there will always be an extremist group somewhere intent on wrecking havoc.
What i am saying is, is how do we know we are making a stand in the right places. I know there is always a conspiricy theory behind every thing but ignoring this do our govrnments really know what the are looking for ???

..." What i am saying is, is how do we know we are making a stand in the right places"...

How do we know we are doing the right thing by NOT taking a stand of one or the other and just remaining neutral?

It is always important to do the right thing, But in the current world of politics, Do the people really know the full truth of How to decide to do the right thing.

We make decisions on what we know to be true, but I feel that there is always an under current of Deceit for profit in most cases.
History has shown this and if we knew then what we know now I think a lot of wars would possibly have been avoided.

The Commandments say " Thou shall not covet thy neoghbours goods "
It is broken everyday in a small scale to very large and massive scale.

Weve just answered our own questions, yes i agree with you there as i said, do our goverments really know, or is it just a chance to flex thier war machines muscles.
I certainly dont think we should remain neutral, but i do think there is a lot of uncertainties, and at what cost to human lives and when do we see a positive outcome. Are we fighting these people in the right places ?

I am sure when they come under fire, they wish they were Neutral.

Bless them all that they may return home safe and sound. irish

theres a quagmire, "the right thing" no matter what this decision is it will adversely effect someone,
It's much easier to take a stand, they can always change their perspective and those who disagree can go around/ignore you

I choose taking a stand, most wars todays are over issues never truly resolved from long long ago, and most wars are attributed to a country or nations "doing the right thing" I personally can not think of a "war" that has ended where peace is prevailent without soldiers and military might visible.

I disagree...I see it as the "easiest" because you didn't have to make a decision...didn't have to take the backlash for that decision...and allows you to sit on the fence under the blanket of being "neutral"....JMOdunno

This is what i mean...

We are talking politics in this thread but what if you applied that same mentality to your day to day life...your job..your responsibilities...your relationship...

The other side, be it political or relational, isn't remaining neutral, so if you choose to remain so, you will eventually be overrun by the opposition.
