When receiving a message from someone here, it could be useful if Geo IP info was added in a header, telling from where the sender was logged in when posting. A brilliant anti scam tool, whenever possible to be used. That is - not the IP number itself, just the country info.

confused Not really, it is no problem for scammers like the Nigeria Connection guys to use foreign IP´s, btw without using a anonymous proxy server.
I myself use that tools for being able to look US TV stations when I am outside US. blushing

I did say "whenever possible to be used"

They are generally more savvy about transfer functions and banking rules than they are about IP and networking. Its used on other sites, with great success. It is filtering quite a few, the rest is up to our own creative thinking to figure out.

yes, IP identifiers could be handy at times, though I tend to take people at face value generally, and would rather trust than not. My downfall, I know.sigh

What I would love to have, however, is a tool to be able to detect multiple profiles for the same person hmmm

Well, you've hit on something really significant. I'm left scratching my head wondering what he heck goes on with some people. I'm curious about personalities at the best of times, and no less online.

In fact, one member comes to mind immediately. Not so much different personalities with same profile (this person has had at least one other different profile), but very different moods. I even went back to read a few of their posts from a year or so ago, and I wasn't wrong. Their posts were bright and witty, intelligent and all these things. Now this same person's posts come across, consistently so, as generally aloof, a tad boring and even somewhat arrogant. Still intelligent, though.

Go figuredunno

Mike - I think your suggestion is very timely as I constantly get mails from women claiming to be in Italy or the USA when clearly they are in neither location - if the Geo IP could be relied on, it'd be a very useful check .. but how easy is it to circumnavigate and present a false location? .. I have heard that if someone wants to give the impression of being in a different location, it was quite easy to do, is that true? .. if so, that might lead people to be even more duped than at present .. isn't there also a question of privacy involved?

This gets a bit technical, but I am free today... laugh

First the privacy issue - No, as long as no other information is given, only to what country his or hers current IP belongs, there is no issue.

It is easy to get around by simply using a anonymizer, but what then happens is that the IP most often will either be untraceable or it will show any other country for which this service is placed, in which for both cases will lead to information that clearly tells this person is up to no good.

There is two cases where it will go wrong, and needs to be addressed by the programmers; one where the member is using internet over satellite and the other where a mobile network with a central "proxy" or gateway is being used. This could and should then be stated.

Basically, to really get around it, one would need to have a computer placed in the country where one claim to be, and direct all traffic through it to have a perfect disguise.

I have so far not seen any of the scammers use that tool anywhere else, and I have seen my fair share...

it sounds a really good idea in that case .. I wonder if it couldn't be taken one more step even .. if the stated profile location and the IP don't match, the mail isn't sent .. is that possible?

Well, yes, it would, but then I would get a problem when I am away and want to post in here, but don't have time to change my country info. laugh
