Multiculturalism has 'failed (542)
Boban1: Berlin, Germany (CNN) -- Multiculturalism in Germany has "absolutely failed," German Chancellor Angela Merkel told her party's youth wing at a conference Saturday.
"The approach of saying, 'Well, let's just go for a multicultural society, let's coexist and enjoy each other,' this very approach has failed, absolutely failed," she said in a speech.
The remarks echo a comment she made to CNN last month in response to a question from Becky Anderson about Germany's Muslim population.
"We've all understood now that immigrants are a part of our country, (but) they have to speak our language, they have receive an education here," Merkel told CNN's "Connect the World" program September 27.
Germany's population is about 5 percent Muslim, the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life estimated last year. Its roughly 4 million Muslims make up the largest Muslim population in western Europe.

I know people who lived already for more than 10 years in Belgium, and they still refuse to learn the language..
WTF..they doing here, if they don't even wanna try to learn the language where they living for more than 10 years...

I agree just clarifying what you were getting at. Integration is ok, but setting up communities within communities, and expecting the indiginous population to change their way of life to the immigrants systems hardly seems fair. I do not specify any religion or culture here.

I haven't lived in Germany for a very long time, so I don't really feel fully competent to comment on the situation and the concerns there.
I have, however, spent a long time in the UK, and it seems to me that similar feelings are voiced there from time to time; maybe for similar reasons as in Germany, maybe for other reasons, I don't know.
The question is: what is this elusive "multiculturalism"? Does it mean that people of different backgrounds should completely blend in with the rest of the population of the country they are living in? Or should they preserve their identity and resist integration as much as they can?
I think a good middle way needs to be found, every individual has to find his/her own solution.
There will always be some problems, when people from different backgrounds meet, but to publicly announce a complete failure, like Angela Merkel did, is far more harmful than helpful.

Perhaps having been in England you can realise the extent of the change there. As you know walking around in London is like walking around in a Foreign country. (Foreign to England that is)I don't think there is a reasonable solution now, Maybe second or third generations may not be so entrenched in their lifestyles.

It sounds like history is about to repeat itself. I agree people should try to learn the language of the host country if they intend spending their lives there, but the way Merkel is stating the case, makes one a little nervous, particularly since these people were allowed into the country without any pre-condition or pre-requisite to learn the language within a given time - what's her solution - mass deportation or the re-opening of the Gas Chambers?

I agree, but in England the liberal attitude is to favour the immigrant over the indiginous. Every one knows if you go to England you get Accomodation, benefits etc. In most other countries you need to qualify, for any benefits, in some countries you just don't get nothing.
