Think I'll start with this, have to start with an Irish band, why not, im not a huge fan of U2 but this has to be one of the best intro's...builds up slowly..great stuff....

Agree with all of the above. For me a great song intro give an instant sense of anticipation and sort of grabs your attention. There's none much better than this:
