Hi...

This is the craic...I tried to install xp sp2 on to a friends machien tonight but the product key was 'in valid'.;even though I took the 'PK' from the cd...(I opened up the cd went to the i386 file and took it from there)....

I put another working XP into it and it seem's the installation is caught in some sort of loop!!! I can't boot from a new CD, everytime when I power on I get the installation page (39 mins job) from XP....(I opened up the bio's to boot from CD not the HDD)

I've tried to clear the CMOS by removing the battery and RAM but to no avail...I've even tried to reformat the HDD with ubuntu 10.10 the same..everytime I boot, it automatically brings me to the 39mins install xp screen shot and ask's me to put in the cd to finish installing (the product kzy doesn't work)...I've tried several other VLK's (same story..key invalid)..;

I hope I made sense...If anyone can shed some light on the subject...I'll buy them a pint...

I understand from an other post that you may have solved the issue, please tell, as service pack 2 did have a number of issues.

A good site when access to internet, is

OEM issues of the install CD was particularly troublesome, and extracting the PID did not work in most cases.

If the disk came with the computer there should be a label on the computer that give the product key. sometimes the disk cover has a different number, which is not the product key. If the number that you are looking at has OEM on it, that is not the product key. There should be a label on the computer if the OS came with that computer.

I'm back to sqauare one...What I know is this (I gave up around 7am this morning)

1...It's a real SP2 CD...
2...PK was taken from the CD (i386)
3...The PK is invalid....
4...I've tried several other VLK's (no avail)
5...I know the hardware is working (both oprcrack and partition wizzard both boot directly from the CD)
6...When I try to boot directly from another OS, I'm told no OS is found...
7...The machien had a dodgy XP installed before (so it can take XP)

If I download an XWP sp1 or try to clone the HDD would that work??

I'm at a loss....

Boot from the windows XP CD, press the "R" key in the setup in order to start the restoration console. Select your windows XP installation from the list, and enter the administrator password.
Enter the command: "FIXMBR" (without the quotes) at the input prompt and confirm the next question with a "Y" (without the quotes). Use exit to restore the computer.

After you can install windows XP and it should give you the option to format the hard drive before installing.

The product key is found by right clicking the CD, opening it up and looking in 'i386 filr'..for a document called 'unattended text'..

The PK is real...

I suppose you've tried going to an earlier Restore Point?

Beyond that, I'm stumped. You seem to have tried everything else.

Hope you solve it soon. It can be all toofrustrated
