I am a non smoker but enjoy the atmosphere of the local bars.
The old men come in during the week for a drink, play dominos or cards, and smoke. Younger people, mostly musicians of the village band, use the bars at weekends. Not all but a lot smoke. In 2011 the law changes, no smoking in all public places. These quiet bars that struggle through the week with few customers will lose that weekend custom which I am sure gets them from one fiesta to the next financially.
Already in the Twelve years I have lived here I have seen 3 bars close due to lack of business. I now fear that 2 more will close shortly, leaving one souless bar Restaurant !
My neighbour’s mother died a week ago, lung cancer, 73 year old, never smoked. The issue is that her daughter, my neighbour, visited her mother during 3 weeks and saw, as she expressed it, young women, slightly more than 40, dying of diseases caused by smoking as COPD. And she now is worrying for herself as she works among smokers and it’s known that passive smoking is also damaging.
I smoked myself, though, as I didn’t like the smell, especially when it gets stale, I always tried to get out – no one has to endure my grief together with me, or have they?
