Iranian death-sentence woman reported free
OTTAWA - An Iranian woman who was sentenced to death has reportedly been freed after an international outcry, including pleas from Prime Minister Stephen Harper's wife.

The Prime Minister's Office circulated word of Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani's release to reporters.

Laureen Harper hosted a discussion forum on Iranian human rights last month and signed a letter imploring the Iranian government to set Ashtiani free.

"I am heartened today to hear the news reports that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has apparently been freed from her unjust imprisonment," Laureen Harper said in a statement Thursday.

"While today's news is encouraging, there is more that must be done to improve the lives of women in Iran. It remains my hope that women in Iran may one day enjoy the same benefits, rights and freedoms that we are so fortunate to have here in Canada."

Ashtiani was sentenced to death by stoning after appearing on TV to confess to her husband's murder — a confession her lawyers say was forced.

The sentence was changed to hanging after a massive international outcry, and she has been awaiting her execution.

A press release on the website of the International Campaign Against Stoning called Ashtiani's release heart warming and a historical success for humanity.

Hallelujah!

It's a beginning, I suppose.

But what about an honor killing? dunno

If this victim is believed that she has brought dishonour upon her family or community, is she really freed? Even after she is freed from jail.

Hiding implies having family and/or friends

(UNFPA) The United Nations Population Fund estimates that about as many as 5,000 women and girls get murdered by members of their own families every year, and women's groups in the Middle East and Southwest Asia insist that number of the victims is at least four times more.

applause

I despair for womens rights in Iran and other countries who see them as second class citizens.
I hope that this case helps others.
Thanks for posting.

but yes, it is a great triumph for womens rights in iran.

one hopes that she is not now vulnerable to mob rule

Funny you mention this...Was thinking it as well. That outcome I'm afraid is a bit more bleak.
