I don't think you can always just know. Sometimes you have to put it in a higher powers hands and know that it can't always be your will and if it is ment to be then it will be.

Since this is your first attempt, I hope you don't mind me playing around with your work. I fiddled with it below. I tend to rhyme a lot. Some people don't like rhyming poetry. I don't always rhyme, depends on what I'm trying to convey. They say the real art of poetry is simply to convey your feelings onto another. There's never any right or wrong way to write it.
The real key to writing poetry I've been told is to simply write a lot of it. Just ignore the ones you don't like and keeping on jotting. Also, never be afraid to go back to an old one and redo it. I believe the most important thing to writing poetry is simply having the urge to write it. If you've got that it's just a matter of finding the right words to convey your feelings, questions or messages. Keep at it!
