I'm not aware of all the facts but kicking someone in the face (head) for no apparent reason is just not right. Apparently this guy also suffered a head injury some months before in a motorcycle accident; a kick like this was certainly not in his best interest.
I hope justice presides over this.

There is no reason whatsoever to kick someone in the head or face. I have no respect for a policeman who stoops so low. Generally I support the police but there are some who are just plain bad apples.

I have seen that video many times and the cops were way out of line using excessive force. There was no need of them to keep kicking him in the head. There is an investigation going on and it does NOT look good for the cops.
The poor guy was off work with a bad back also. Sad!wave

Hey Muchachito, I am curious where did you hear or read that the RCMP might offer some cash to this man to "shut him up" since NOTHING was remotely mentioned of this on the news ?, do you realize the uproar this would cause with the public if that happens ?, and I am sure it will be told to the public. Please explain that part in your post. As to your comment that they are keeping him in custody, well that's not true. They clearly showed Tavares walking down the street on tonights news.

I've heard a few people say that if the BC government signs to renew the BC RCMP contract, they are not just signing a contract renewal, but also a declaration of war. People here in BC are sick and tired of the way they constantly thumb their noses at the laws, and laugh when the charges are either dropped, or not even laid at all.

In my opinion, our 'government' has declared war already. It is just a question of how we proceed to fight back. My personal connection in this fight comes from the unexplained in custody death of one Ian Bush.

BC RCMP urging calm ahead of rally over alleged police brutality
Vancouver Sun - Kelly Sinoski

Kelowna RCMP officials are urging the public to remain calm during a planned protest march Sunday after reading blogs that suggested "civil disobedience may erupt" in the Okanagan city.
Kelowna RCMP officials are urging the public to remain calm during a planned protest march Sunday after reading blogs that suggested "civil disobedience may erupt" in the Okanagan city.

The march, scheduled for noon, is in response to a recent video that showed Buddy Tavares on his knees allegedly being kicked in the head by a Kelowna RCMP officer.

Sgt. Bill McKinnon, who called a news conference Saturday, said he’s concerned the protest may get out of control and pleaded for participants to keep the peace.

"I have read the comments in various blogs that civil disobedience may erupt and that does concern me," he said. "I urge everyone to remain calm, make their point, and allow the legal processes that are in place to come to completion."

McKinnon said "senior members of the RCMP hear loud and clear what the general public’s views are in relation to the video."

He added that the investigation is ongoing and three additional investigators have been brought into to help interview about 40 witnesses in the case.

The officer, who has been identified as Const. Geoff Mantler, was initially placed on desk duty but RCMP say he has now been suspended from duty with pay until further notice. Abbotsford police will conduct a criminal investigation into the incident.

The incident occurred on Jan. 6 as police responded to a call about gunshots at Harvest Golf Course in Kelowna, where Tavares had previously worked.

Tavares, 51, has been charged with careless use of a firearm "in relation to a domestic violence situation that is still under investigation," the RCMP said.

I think the organizers, those willing to take part in a planned rally and those who spoke out about this incident deserve recognition. It’s people like this who make a difference. canada

I completely agree, I think they should get some recognition for their efforts. However I really don't think this is over with yet. They stated on the news that they only decided to consider recommending charges in an attempt to defuse a possible violent confrontation at the rally. Even if they should proceed to lay charges of assault causing bodily harm, that does not mean the charges would go through. Have you not heard of Cpl. Benjamin Monty Robinson. He was the R.C.M.P. officer that ordered the tazering of Robert Dziekanski, he along with three other officers lied under oath during the braidwood inquiry, neither of those cops were even charged with perjury. Then a short time later Robinson while driving home with a child in his car, hit and killed 21-year-old motorcyclist Orion Hutchinson. Robinson "claimed" he drove home to have a drink to settle his nerves before calling police. He was originally charged with impaired driving causing death, but that was dropped to the lesser charge of obstruction of justice, then even that charged was eventually dropped, so Robinson got away with 2 deaths. Just because Const. Geoff Mantler "may" be charged, that's still a long way from a conviction, and to be completely honest, I am still having my doubts that Mantler will be convicted of any crime, and if by some off hand chance that he would be, you can almost bet all he'll get is another "paid holiday" (although they call it suspended with pay)

I agree this isn't over yet and I'm hoping people keep putting the pressure on; doing so might eventually lead to justice being served.
In this specific case I'm also wondering if the accusation of assault causing bodily harm is what really took place, to me it looks more like aggravated assault.

And so it begins. This was in todays Vancouver Sun:

VICTORIA — A Victoria police officer was stabbed in the neck by a man on the street Monday morning in what police say was an unprovoked attack.

The female constable had been investigating a theft of a chocolate bar from a convenience store. When she left the store, a man attacked her, slashing her hands as she tried to defend herself and stabbing her in the neck, said police spokesman Sgt. Grant Hamilton.

Hamilton said the man was not related to the theft investigation, but for an unknown reason, turned violent when he saw the officer.

A motorist driving by saw the man on top of the officer, jumped out of his car and grabbed the attacker, using the officer's handcuffs to restrain him until police could arrive.

The man was arrested and is in police custody. Hamilton said he is known to police.

The female officer, who has been with the department for two years, is in hospital but her condition is unknown, Hamilton said.

Police are not releasing the officer's name until they can notify her family, Hamilton said.

The block was cordoned off by police tape and forensic investigators collected evidence, including a red baseball cap and debris.

Hamilton said the citizen who intervened likely saved the officer's life.
