With over 60% of Insurance claims lodged by flood victems being rejected by insurance companies I decided to check exactly what my current coverage was , Armed with a list of what if questions I finnally discovered that had my home been washed away ide be farked so I did some shopping.
I strongly suggest others do the same !
Many didnt cover Tsuanami either
With all the devestation just thinking how ide get on if I lost everything was too much to contemplate.
Im now heavily insured if the worst was to happen ide actually be ok

Good advice Kizzy, it is all in the fine print.

'Flood' has different definitions

* flood as in from a storm and is water damage say your gutters overflow after heavy rain

* other policies cover for flash flooding

* many policies wont cover damage from 'flood' which is broadly defined as when a river breaks a bank and inundates your property.

Each company picks and chooses their slant on a 'flood'.

For anyone making a claim, don't be put off by a call centre employee of an insurance company who says you are not covered. Lodging a claim, put it in writing, gives you legal rights to have your claim propertly assessed etc.

Yes, check your policy, make those calls. conversing wave

Thanks Kizzy, you're right... it is a minefield to get through the red tape, and actually understand what you are covered for.

There are 3 insurance companies who have said 'No Probs' to the Brisbane Flood Victims... I recall Suncorp and another one something like AAPA confused

Suncorp said straight away that anyone insured with them has flood cover. So they've been really good.

NRMA - are being utter a/holes to everyone. I recall other floods where they've been like that too.

AAMI - I saw a program where a Brissy girl was crying and sobbing because they said she wasnt covered

Hope that helps. cool

yeah I just took out contents insurance and I went with suncorp/GIO cos they were the only ones I found who had automatic flood cover (as well as fire and theft) who were also reasonable in their quoted price thumbs up

Also its best to over insure the difference between 250,000 coverage and 350,000 coverage is only about $8.00 per week its stupid not to get the extra same with contents people often underinsure think about what it would cost you to replace evrything new at todays prices right down to new clothspegs makeup etc it all adds up !!!

Good Call Ms Kizzy,

In another life I used to sell insurance and I always suggested to people to collect the junk mail for a few weeks and then do a check around their house and work out what it would cost to cover EVERYTHING in their house from brand new.

People would always want to just pick a random figure of anywhere between 40-70K and I would encourange them to go higher.

If anyone thinks I might be wrong.. look up the term "under-insurance" and "under insurance clauses".

I personally have my contents at $110000 and I add 5% a year for new purchases. I also have to seperately insure my collection of books (1st eds of various authors I like - Incl Biggles! wink ) as they are worth more than the limits on my everyday insurance.

I pay $102 a month with Vero (Which was formerly Royal and Sun Alliance) and that also covers me for accidental damage and loss/theft outside the home up to $1000 per item.

I recently dropped my $770 camera over the side of the boat into the ocean and that is covered by my home and contents policy!
