Hello beautiful people :)

I am a Hungarian born young woman but been living in QLD, Australia for the past 16 years of my life. Australia is an awesome place, however, I really don't enjoy the hot and humid weather here. I am more of a cold climate person and therefore I am considering possibly to move to Canada at the end of next year, one I finish my university degree here.

Just basically wanted to know what is life like in Canada. Cost of living per week, job opportunities, people, culture, recommended areas to possibly live....plus I would like to make some friends there so in case I do end up moving there, at least I won't be in the "I don't know anyone boat".

Cheers :)

Depends on where you want live and a number of factors:
- Do you speak French? maybe Quebec?
- Do you like to live around lots of people or do you like solitude? Toronto, Ontario
danceline
- Are you wealthy? maybe British Columbia wave
- Do you like lots of snow? maybe Baffin Island.laugh

Hi Scorpia,

I live in Vancouver, BC and there are a lot of Aussie's here. A lot of them work in the city or they work up at Whistler/Blackcomb, Mount Seymour or Cypress. They love to ski/snowboard. I like how on a beautiful sunny day you can going skiing/snowboarding in the morning and then the afternoon you can come back down to the city and go sailing/waterskiing! You can do anything here! And most people here are very active and like to keep fit, more than any other province.

The people in Van. are very friendly and laid back. The only problem here is, it's the most expensive place to live in Canada. But the expense of rent etc. would never deter me from living somewhere. If I wanted to live there bad enough I would. You would maybe sacrifice abit of space instead. I've been here 24 years.

In the winter we get snow sometimes but alot of the time we get rain. (We call it liquid sunshine!). We just had a major downpour the other night and it was unbelievable. Most of the time in the winter we are above 0 degrees, more like 5 or so. The summers aren't too hot but we do have the odd few days where depending on where you live it can reach the high 30's. But most of the time I'd say the average is low to mid 20's. I love the summers here. We have beautiful lakes and the ocean. Of course your beaches are probably better!

The thing with Toronto is I've heard it can get pretty hot and muggy/humid there so you may not like that.

There is also the Prairies but the cold may shock you too much! Brrr!

Otherwise you may want to try the East Coast. I've heard Halifax is beautiful.

Good luck.

I live in Nova Scotia (close to Halifax) and IF you were to come eat--Halifax is the best BUT again the west coast is your best bet for culture, jobs, beauty, etc.... .

There are no jobs on the east coast. You will only find beauty and friendly people here.
Good Luck!!handshake

Thank you all for the information! I only speak English and Hungarian so I would probably not do so well in the more French dominated parts. I have some relatives that I never met, who own a cafe around British Columbia, so might try and get in touch with them somehow. Halifax sounds like a great place :) All the feedback from you all makes me just want to go there right now :0)
It sounds like a great country! And I do miss the snow and white christmas (since being from eastern europe, I am used to the minus temperatures)! I would love to try skiing and snowboarding and all the other winter fun activites Canada has to offer :)

If I was living there I would definitely get into watching hockey, I never followed the sport before but it looks interesting :)

Thank you all again for the information :) muchly appreciated :)

I can certainly let you know about the labour market in Canada and job opportunities here. That's been my area of expertise. I'll be more than willing to help provide you with specifics and appropriate links for different provinces.

The leaves are pretty here in the fall but along the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton are the most beautiful colors. I have never travelled out west...I would love to see BC.

Thank you for that :) I am doing a bachelor degree in public health with a health promotion major. I am trying to become a health promotion officer. What is the health industry like over there?

I am not sure where exactly my relatives are. I will have to contact my father back in Hungary as, he got second cousins there in Canada, so he will be able to possibly get me in touch with them. By the way, thank you for the well wishing :) You Canadian people seem very kind :)

Thanks for the info and welcome to CS. BC is beautiful! But I'm a little biased as I've lived here on the coast my whole life! dancing I like it here as it usually doesn't get that cold or that hot where as further North it gets colder and hotter.

No matter where you decide to go inside Canada you're very welcome. One thing about Canada, it covers a vast area so it has a bit of everything.
I guess the best thing to do is find out where your friends and relatives live and see what that particular city or region has to offer.

Wishing you the best canada

You could move to the Prariues where it is 40 degrees celcius in the summer and -40 degrees in the winter. You can spend alkl that cash you make on winter cloths, snow shovels, electric heaters and fill your garage full of tools so that you have a place to hide from your spouse and something to do in the winter. It sorta like livin on the moon in a motorhome.Oh yeah the mosquitos are the size of small airplanes and carry STD's. But if you wanta a cadalac with a gun rack and toilets with no doors thats the place for you! Your best bet is the WEST COAST!Or better VAncouver Island! cya soon!

Canada is wonderful!! Especially Vancouver BC!
The cost of living right now is pretty high as landlords are still riding the skirts of the Olympics & think they can still charge over 1,000$/mo for a 1 brm LOL!!!
There are some reasonably priced places out there if you look.
It's a wonderful city full of culture & Nature, mountains to hike/ski depending on the time of year & always some sort of festival happening.Lakes the ocean & the beaches are to die for!
Cheers!!!!
