Before I get involved with him, or before we take the step that leads from casual dating to serious one-on-one exploration of whether we could have a future together?
The list is pretty short:
Is he single?
Does he smoke, use drugs, or drink to excess?
Is he HIV-negative?
Does he have children from a previous relationship?
Is he politically progressive?
Is he attractive -- not handsome, necessarily, but not butt-ugly (a technical term, mind you!) either?
Does he treat women with the same respect he gives to men?
How's his sense of humor?

Princess, this reminds me of a story I recently recieved.
Seems that King Arthur had a question,"what do women want", and only an old witch had the answer. Although he traveled far and wide, he finally had to ask her. She said she would answer him, but only if he gave his greatest knight, Sir Lancealot, to her in marriage. King Arthur talked this over with Lancealot, and he agreed to do this for the good of the kingdom. The Witch told Lancealot that she had the ability to be a beautiful woman for half a day, and a terrible, ugly, smelly witch for the other half, and asked Lancealot which he would prefer. A beauty by day, witch by night, or witch by day, and beauty by night.
Lancealot dwelled on this for some time, by day beauty would be nice to meet family and friends, but then by night would be nice, too, as that was when he was able to share his passion. After some time, he answered her.
Whatever you would like, Dear, is fine. At this, the witch turned into the beautifull woman, and declared that she would remain beautifull forever, as the answer to the Kings question was at hand. Women want to control thier own destinys, thier own way. And because Lancealot had allowed her this, her beauty would shine forever for him.
