People say all kinds of stuff about fruit. Some of what they say is right, other stuff is exadgerated. I'm wondering about plain normal fruit from the grocery store. Aside from claims of genetically engineered fruit, and pesticides and washing fruit and boycotting certain grapes, etc, a lot of fruit has all kinds of signs of common blights. I found a freaky gross looking scar in an orange peel. I can't look up what it is. Then, our grapefruits have stuff that looks like snow on the peel. That's a common blight on citrus trees, but is it safe to eat? So, without any really gross fruit stories; every fruit has scars and blemishes and whatnot on the skins. How do you tell if it is safe to eat? banana sigh jackolantern

All fruits and veggies should have a good rinse off before eating. If you are not sure, rinse it off again.

I agree with you Witchy, I am not paying good money to eat something that has some sort of blight or mole crud on it it...Some of the grapefruit lately looks deformed and not very appetizing. Of course one would think USDA is checking all of this out and once you have consumed the mess, typically they will notify you after the fact..."All been removed off the shelves." Like they did with the peanuts a few years ago.....doh

There is no way -for mortals- to know which fruits and/or vegetables are safe to eat.

As it has said, the most perfect ones are the more likely of being sprayed with pesticides to avoid insects, disease, etc.. damage, so they have the cosmetic quality that consumers are demanding.

The ones who present some scars or defects, it could be because of some insect damage so not many pesticides where applied to them or the insects are resistant to them.

Give some credit to your government. For us (Mexicans) to export to USA and Canada, our fruits and vegetables, they undergo very extensive examinations, test for pesticides residues, bacteria, traceability, etc. etc…..

A way to avoid chemicals in your fruits and vegetables is to get the “organic” ones yet a bit more expensive.

I got an orange that had something imbedded in the peel, but it didn't go through to the inside. Then there were some grapefruits with the snowy looking blight on the skin. I ate these fruits. But I didn't eat an avocado I cut open that was rotting. I'm just trying to figure out if this stuff is ok to eat or not, and you would think it would be on the net somewhere easy to find, but it isn't. Then you would think that if it is sold that way it should be ok, but that isn't the case either.

When I eat spices from a certain local Latin grocery they seem to make me unwell. So do dried apricots from Turkey. It makes me wonder what else there is that could make a person unwell.

I live around the corner from a fresh farmers market. Im buying produce as the farmers unload it straight from the field and off the truck. It aint pretty. But Ive always washed and produce in dishsoap and water especially citrus fruit. For things like lettuce etc, I use betadine. But no-one has ever gotten sick from my food and I think things like pesticides cause cancer. So you really cant be too careful. wine

Must have been a fruit fight.
