Excuse me here... but you did not ask a question. Merely told the author of the question to re-direct her question to someone else... Specifically Mr George Bush, President of USA... whom we all know doesnt acknowledge the different cultures of the world.... so a pretty pointless piece of adviceprofessor
It is an interesting question....think about it... HOWCOME we all so different? Must have something to do with the weather maybe? Or else its simple "tribal identification".... Like teenagers who all dress and act the same, at the various stages of life. confused

Oh dear; if all people were Swiss who would work in nice Swiss restaurants and bars etc? (joke!)

I've lived and worked in many countries in several continents and find that people are very similar in so many ways but also different - maybe differences in culture are cultural mutations that have adapted to the environment and that the cultural mutations that have adapted 'best' have survived.

For example one way that the Swiss and Maltese are similar is that they both have a culture of being warm and friendly to foreigners - surely useful in countries where tourism is so important!

I'm sure that Maltese would be very happy to employ poor Swiss people in the tourist industry if Malta had evolved a culture of also welcoming money from whatever source into a discrete banking service for wealthy foreigners - mind you, 'The gnomes of Valletta' just doesn't sound quite right!

I take it you wrote "tongue in cheek"?

Firstly... the Swiss are not warm and friendly to foreigners.. they are well mannered, polite, and mind their own business... hence the success of their businesses.

Secondly... Tourism is not important, per se, to Switzerland,. they merely cater for the tourist, to their usual high standard.

Thirdly... There exists no such thing as a "poor Swiss" person.

Fourthly.... Is there a reason why Malta should offer employment which only hinges on being "discrete bankers"? I would be interested to know how the Maltese tourist industry is connected to their banking services?

I hope this thread is continued.. and that Rusty Knight of Malta enlightens me as to his thought train here.

My concern about the whole world being Swiss was... That could be one way to control the World population!!!! (remember the crack about Heaven and Hell?)

Ok, I was posting 'tongue in cheek'. Swiss people are so polite (especially when they take your moneytongue ), but I do have several Swiss friends - even in Gozo, Malta!

I have to agree that the Maltese at least appear to be far more friendly than the Swiss and that Switzerland has many other industries other than tourism, BUT tourism IS important and if you lost all your tourists it would be bound to hurt the pockets of many people and not only foreigners working in Switzerland but many Swiss as well..........

By the way, as a landlocked country without a navy I think you have an Olympic sailing team - yes? I think Malta should have a snow skiing team if they haven't already got one - do they?

Maybe the Swiss are more quiet and reserved because if you talk very loudly in the mountains you can encourage an avalanche - there are no snow avalanches in Malta!

I think that Malta and Swirzerland should make an ideal subject of comparison for discovering differences in culture between two
countries - one surrounded by the sea and the other surrounded by countries who would love to own a little piece of the Swiss chocolate industry.

Oh - if you wish to impress me please send me case of a good quality 'Valais' wine. blushing No toblerone, thank you!

As the only thing that a Swiss is interested in is his/her next holiday, I can only agree that the Swiss are the most polite Europeans there are.
But thats only to make sure that you dont get close enough to try and reorganise their organised lives!rolling on the floor laughing

Puccini chocolate is marvellous and is better than Swiss chocolate.
Puccini chocolate is from Amsterdam!!

I am not a choco-fan, but would quite happily travel to go collect someo fo that stuff!!

I think this is a really good question, Princess!

But I don't think we are that different deep down... all the things we do differently are really just on the surface...

Those "surface differences" are what has always been fun and adventurous to explore the many cultures I have seen first hand; one concept of true horror for me would be that if we were all the same.

We all bleed, and we all hurt, and we all love our children.

And does anyone else find it strange that the cultures who fight the most with each other are the ones who are the most similar to one another? Take the Jews and Arabs...they both wear those little scull-caps to worship, dont eat pork, segregate their mosques/synagogues, have male only "priests", they even argue and fight over the same ancestry, and Holy places?dunno
