Seems the only way to stop it is to not rise to it and just ignore what is said and move on and reply to those worth talking to. A reaction is sometimes all they want and all the time there is someone who will fire back then it will continue.

I agree that it's best to ignore it. I sometimes find that easy, sometimes hard. I know it does work though.
