Glatlol: Can anyone tell me what the specifics are?

Here you have to have been living apart for 4 out of the preceding 5 years to apply for divorce.

It should be drafted on Irish Law as I understand it - you need to have been separated for 4 years and children need to be adequately provided for before you can apply for it. It's also a no-fault divorce.

I don't think they dare go against people's wishes. Like you said it would be political suicide. In any case, one political party plus 2 from another should be enough to see it through. Or at least I hope lol.

the free vote issue worries me. the people have decided and they represent the people. this is no longer a question of a free vote.

Yes thats the same. After that it can take as little as 6 weeks from date of application to the decree of divorce being granted. As long as you are both in agreement of course, it can take longer if one or other decides to contest the petition.

missingLondon: Our politicians are doing an ostrich act. The party in government has taken a no stand and it is now saying it has to respect the will of the people and also the conscience of MPs. The battle is not over yet. There is a risk that parliament will not vote this law in. it's not the people. It's our politicians who don't want to distinguish between church and state and if they disregard this referendum it's political suicide. I should hope there would be protests in the streets. Democracy is too precious and our village country bumpkin politicians should bow to it and join the modern world.

Well said!applause

I have exactly the same line of thinking.

If you decide to hold a referendum, it means you want to abstain and let the people decide. Now they have. And they should be given what is due to them. You are there to represent the people and not the other way round.

Indeed all MP's had a chance to voice their personal opinion on their personal ballot vote. Now it's the will of the people that they have to bow down to. No questions and/or going-round-in-circles arguments. It's called INTEGRITY!
