Seems unlikely...

He was a guy I agreed with on some things, and some things not.

The topic at hand... I don't know yet. My "feeling" has always been that Hamas was moderating and becoming less isolated over the past 5 years or so. I see some continuing progress there. The killing of OBL by the USA is a great incentive for them to refrain from violent resistance and amend their charter, and the IDF refrains provocations of their own.

The unity between the two (if it will last as I doubt they will stay united for long) is the worst thing for a long time for Israel. Remember - what is bad for Israel is bad for the West too. When push comes to shove Israel will find friends in places no-one knew existed.

Hamas: Region Changing in Our Favor

The Middle East is changing in Hamas' favor, a senior member of the group said this week in an interview with the Al-Qassam Brigades website.

Hamas terrorist Osama Hamdan said recent rebellions and upheavals in the Arab world played a major role in the reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah.

The changes in the Middle East are leading to a situation in which there will be greater support for Hamas, and for its path of “resistance” in particular, Hamdan said.

He stated that Hamas has no intention of changing its positions – which include the stated goal of eradicating the state of Israel – or of negotiating with Israel.

Hamdan expressed hope that not only would Hamas remain true to its positions, but it would convince Fatah to take a more violent stance as well. The Palestinian Authority under Fatah already believes that there is no point to negotiations, he said, and has made no attempt to persuade Hamas to change its mind regarding peace talks.

The reconciliation between the two groups could lead to increased support among Fatah for the past of “resistance,” he said, using the word “Moqawama,” a word used by Islamist organizations to refer to guerrilla warfare and terrorism.

While Hamdan claimed the reconciliation with Fatah is a sign of his group's growing power, many analysts have stated the opposite, suggesting that Hamas agreed to rejoin Fatah in leading the PA due to fears that its primary source of aid, Syria, is facing trouble. Hamas' popularity has dropped in recent years, particularly among residents of Hamas-run Gaza.

That may be considered one opinion of many in Hamas, the trend is the key. You can listen to 3 different Israeli politiciuans and get dramatically different statements too.

You are pretty much clinging to straws. When push comes to shove (and I personally would love to push and shove Hamas and Fatah!) they need to recognise Israel (even now they don't have schoolbooks that have 'Israel' named on the maps - they still don't recognise Israel which was established in 1948.

They also have not changed their Charter. There is absolutely no inclination on their part for peace.

If you have news links I would like to see them if you think there is a trend for Hammas and Fatah changing for the better and for peace in the region, but I don't think you will come up with anything.

Remember they say one thing in English and the opposite in Arabic.
