jem1964: they slip on the glass of the bottle while they try to reach the bait on the side of the round bottle
the nail is so you can slip the neck of the bottle over it so it holds up the neck for the mice to use as a bridge.
I would imagine the mouse squeeks, but if no one is around to hear it I cant be certain.
and... I know there is a plague of mice but hadnt heard of abseil equipment carrying mice, but imagine if there is such equppied mice that they would get out of the trap, and get a lot of places as well.
sorta reminds me of a nonsense poem from childhood from my grandma:

ohhhhhhh what did he see there??
