I agree.
But who would decide what the pragmatic way for politics should be? Would you trust the next politician who comes along who says he speaks for the national good?
Most people today are educated, which leads to more opinion and more disagreement. Times are also still pretty easy, which means low standards and an unwillingness to change attitudes. It would take a cataclysmic event to change people because experience is the only way people learn.

But like an awful lot of other people on here, I'm not American!

Absolutely.
The Divide and Conquer Strategy, also known as “Divide and Rule Strategy” is often applied in the arenas of politics and sociology. In Divide and Conquer Strategy one power breaks another power into smaller, more manageable pieces, and then takes control of those pieces one by one. It generally takes a very strong power to implement Divide and Conquer Strategy. In order to successfully break up another power or government, the conqueror must have access to strong political, military, and economic machines.

Seems they've been orchestrating events for awhile now... one after another. We've become immuned to death, blood, manipulation, tragedy, conscience or being controlled... just the status quo.

solitare: War seems to automatically unite a country; what then does Peace do? Divide it, send it into various levels of disorder and chaos?? Some countries can't seem to tolerate Peace; they need wars for their own narrow minded agendas. While this seems clear and objectionable to many other countries, none are uniting to put a stop to these rogue countries that need wars to prosper, better control their economy, get rid of surplus people, etc. There seems to be no remedy; outlawing War is ridiculed by the 'powerful' countries; the world's media treat the concept with utter contempt and advise us to take it as a joke always ready to point out why it couldn't possibly work; really?? ...We are all sick and tired of these endless speeches by the powerful leaders about how they love peace and their brands of democracy and the latest catch phrase of 'taking this historic moment' to make the needed for the betterment of all humankind...yeah, right...
Well Hi there Solitaire.... ;) Victoria's best kept secret.
It is interesting how gung ho some are in the war business, may I repeat, business (just like the government has become, simply the legalization of greed and power).
Considering one particular country hasn't had a single international war on it's shores (and yes I'm aware of Mexico), as well as sooo many generations removed from what it actually encompasses for everyone involved... except for our veterans of course... who remain mum for the most part if they have seen intense combat or become alcoholics et al and 30% of our homeless, who if they do bounce eventually back, without committing suicide or harming someone else... take years to recover, yet will never be the same again.
The fact is that a big or little red, white and blue flag does not cure anything or anyone from the ramifications of bloodshed... or is it any longer even remotely 'righteous' . It simply makes the old and powerful irresponsibly toy with other peoples lives for profit.. ego or financial. Which these days doesn't even trickle down to the American people.
It amuses me when they rant on about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq... when WE HAVE more dirty tricks in our arsenal of fun and exciting things that go boom in the night or worse yet, experimented on our own troops as guinea pigs over and over again; mind control, lsd, atomic bombs and a cornucopia of other delicious mind altering drugs or chemical type weapons up our sleeves. Just how did those drug companies get so involved in DC anyway?
My personal take? We live in the sorriest times in the USA than there has been since the European/Americans started slaughtering the Indians, once again for fun, power and profit. We are at an all time ethical and moral abyss. We haven't advanced, we've regressed.
HUMANITY, civility and ethical compassion are passe' my dear... we live and are controlled by the dogs of war and profit... preferably in someone elses back yard.

Fantastic; so well said. Bravo! You have said in open public what I have basically heard in private by most of the Americans I know or have known while living there; even a few well known authors who chose to leave to live and write elsewhere such as one of my favourites, Gore Vidal, now living in Ravello. His books on the America that you have described above are gems of history , sadly, mostly unknown in the States, such as Imperial America; it's mostly unknown history in Inventing A Nation and his essays on The Second American Revolution are as remarkable as they are illuminating to a people so long brainwashed by their 'ministries of Truth' that they do believe anything they are told to believe because it is 'patriotic' to do so and if not, then you are 'against us' as one of their limited term dictators said. That is the logic of destruction, both to the world at large and on their own nation as well...and so many cheer while what they think they love or do really love, comes crashing down around them as in a slow motion sequence. Thank you for a truly great post!! ENCORE!!

gininitaly: It's a heavy burden.. destroying the world.
I say, let's toss all of the U.S. citizens off of this site as we seem to be such self-absorbed, elitest, war-mongers. What shallow beings we are. I slink off in shame.

I agree with you %100, though I am from England, I am sure you would be happy for the whole world to come together, people are so hell bent on mudslinging, it grieves me so.

Hay John, I'm glad to see that you at least put the mudballs down and decided to listen to what most people have been telling you . We are all in this plannet together and as soon as we stop deviding everyone, the sooner we can fix it's problembs . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . .hear I'll buy you a beer .
Unfortunately it's been to quite a few peoples advantage to keep the pot stirred, useful patter for distraction in these shell games that have taken away more and more of our rights as citizens, to a free and unbiased press and media, to a government by and for 'the people, to the many honest paying for the very greedy few.
Time to wake up and start dealing with the pickle we've let ourselves get pushed into.
