Yes indeed the maltese people did win. A few days ago on this site a member ( Ru4eva ) during a comment exchange on another issue ,asked me if it was true in Malta there is no law relating to divorce. The answer is NO, and sorry Ru4eva for the delay to answer your question but as you are aware I had to leave the sight in a flash on this particular acassion and missed reading your question. On Saturday, June 28th ... in Malta, a referendum was held to establish if the people want the right to divorce and remarry, or NO, and stay in the mess the maltese people have been placed in without the law covering divorce. The catholic church body in Malta executed a strong ( wrong ) campain to influence the NO VOTE but, the church lost as their motive was warped and the people of Malta, are intelligent enough to know what is best for their lives and society. The result of the referendum was ... YES ,the people do want the right to divorce and remarry. It is is not the right to divorce and divorce as a whole which encourage divorce or harm children or society... it is the environment and the personality of human nature. The union is over when a couple cannot accomplish or have the willingness to re-establish that one vital, and important component, which is to enrich each other's lives.

More harm is inflicted on children and society when the chidren are constantly exposed, and in many cases it is for many years, to the conflict and at times hate ... between the parents, and which the ill effects on children and parents are well known to all. The church and it's members have a right to be concerned about the effects of broken marriages but it is not an excuse to control, and sacrifice individual rights to satisfy the religious beliefs of an organization, state or church.

One can safely state, the church or other groups , for centuries and to a degree also to this day and specifically in Malta, are nothing less than one big internal political play and as history indicate also spilling out into the country's politics. Mature religious faith does yield obvious merits when it does not harm those around you. The personality of the present world environments indicate clearly that you cannot control and harm your citizens forever. MY QUESTION TO THE READERS IS .... DO YOU BELIEVE IT WAS REALLY GOD WHO INTRODUCED THE INSTITUTION OF MARRIAGE, OR WAS IT MAN ... TO SATISFY A REQUIRMENT TO BE ABLE TO CREATE THE MODERN STATE.

Especially the Church. This was not just a vote for a simple civil rite, but also a big NO to the fear campaign done by certain institutions. The funniest thing that when the voting came to an end on Saturday evening, the Archbishops issued a statement to say sorry if they hurt someone feelings during the campaign. It's easy to say sorry, but are this not the people they always say to deliver love and not hate and fear.

A very nice headline in one of the local newspapers was: 156,000 sinners voted yes. applause

Sinners or no sinners everyone is a loser with divorce. You will prove me right in 10 or 20 years time. But then it will be too late.

Maybe yes, maybe no...but where will you be so that we may be able to let you know?

Remember, and I quote you "if they do not like it, then they can go (live) abroad.

Since you do not like it, Bon Voyage to the Philippines.

A loser in what way?

Is it better to leave people trapped in a marriage that is abusive, to let children grow up thinking that this is the way relationships are?

The ones who do not take good care of their families are the ones who will lose the most.
From some one who had a 24 yr marriage and someone who did take good care of her family, though.

Sinners all because there is not perfection in humans.

You will prove me right in 10 or 20 years time.
You need not to wait 10 or 20 yr look at other cultures.

If you believe in marriage, stick to it.
Be happy with your partner and your family, treasure your family.

Dear Maltese friends, i am so so happy with the result of this vote.. for you and also for your kids..

everyone has the right to decide how to shape his/her own life, if his/her marriage is ruined ... no other power or right to decide on behalf of us, the Catholic Church in the least..

I am 100% sure God or Christ would not deny anyone a chance to re-unite in a happy family with someone else, if their first marriage was a disaster. They are for LOVE not SUFFERING.

The Church is made up of humans, and hence its rules are not infallible.

I hope you find a perfect partner and would never need to make use of divorce. But PLEASE do not try to dictate other people's lives.

Good Luck!

It's a tragedy for everyone when a marriage dies, that's true.
But still it happens.

And when the marriage is already dead, the greatest sin is to prevent people from divorcing and moving on with their lives.

Any religion that tries to dictate morality for the people is a bad religion. What in the world do priests who have never been married know about marriage. How dare they try to impose their authority over others in such a way. They are not elected, and (despite their claims) they do not represent the mind of God.
They are professional religionists. Nothing more.

Bental: I had to re-read.

My post was directed to Piroi. It was he that wrote that he who does not like it (divorce) could go live abroad. I meant to second you.

Just to clear the air, the Divorce issue should never have been a matter of referenda. Even if just one person needs it, then it should be available.

So if you don't mind, I am staying
.

Hi Ben, sorry mate didn't mean you. It was addressed to Piroi too. Agree with you, it must had been a civil rite for ages.

Pls stay, so we can meet in the get-together when it will be organised cheers

Ja, divorce is actually a good thing. Not everyone chooses the person they are able to live their entire life with .... people change.

200 years ago (yes I was there then) the average life of a marriage was 14 years .. because one of them would die.

With modern medicines and luxuries, people live longer.
So now we need divorce.

I`ve had 3 marriages .... God help me if I was to have been stuck with any of them.

I mostly admire .... and have the utmost respect for ... Couples who have married and stayed married throughout their lives!

People celebrating their 40th or 50th or 60th wedding anniversary .... I feel like kissing their feet in sheer admiration!

I am so glad Malta Won. I lived in Malta, many years ago, for 3 years. They are a people beyond reproach. May ALL the Maltese people enjoy this aspect of freedom, and I sincerely hope that there is more freedom to come for them.
Now, onto your question whitehorse. I really do not know who introduced the institution of marriage. All I know is that the institution of marriage did create a safe haven for children, when life was really tough; ie., no social benefits of any kind, the husband/wife had to really work for the survival of their family. Nowadays, with so much freedom, a contract of marriage doesn't seem necessary. Let's hope that for us, who gained this aspect of freedom many years ago, plus many others, are treading the right path.
