The earth's sun blasts up a 'firestorm of radiation' throwing some satellite systems out of kilter. I've been having problems getting into one of my yahoo mail accounts, despite resetting my password about 10 times this morning. Now I've been locked out completely. Possibly completely unrelated, but it's scary to think that all it takes to shut down communication across the globe, is an iddy bitty solar flare up...or two
WASHINGTON (AFP) - An unusual solar flare observed by a NASA space observatory on Tuesday could cause some disruptions to satellite communications and power on Earth over the next day or so, officials said.
The potent blast from the Sun unleashed a firestorm of radiation on a level not witnessed since 2006, and will likely lead to moderate geomagnetic storm activity by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
"This one was rather dramatic," said Bill Murtagh, program coordinator at the NWS's Space Weather Prediction Center....
The resulting geomagnetic storm could cause some disruption in power grids, satellites that operate global positioning systems and other devices, and may lead to some rerouting of flights over the polar regions, Murtagh said.
"Generally it is not going to cause any big problems, it will just have to be managed," he said.
"If you fly from the United States to Asia, flying over the North Pole, there are well over a dozen flights every day," he added.
"During these big radiation storms some of these airlines will reroute the flights away from the polar regions for safety reasons to make sure they can maintain communications.
"People operating satellites would keep an eye on this, too, because geomagnetic storming can interfere with satellites in various ways whether it is the satellite itself or the signal coming down from the receiver."
Vevere, What you call an itty bitty solar flare is actuall a massive ( compared to the Earth ) eruption on the Sun's surface . It would be like a hydrgen bomb that would compleatly cover the Earth and reach out past the Moon . Not so itty bitty when you look at it that way . And that would be a small one at that .

Hi Frankinstien, yes I know it wasn't really iddy, bitty. Was just kidding around. I did read the full article and appreciate the magnitude of the events. That;s why I am concerned as to potential chaos.

I think it is a sign that no matter what technology Man creates, Nature can always strip it back down. Quite scary really.
RDM59: Can this disrupt the function of small hand held electrical appliances ?
Will we have a 2 day flurry of frustrated, angry female rantings ahead ? .......
Only if they have a GPS guidance system attached!! Not something that would affect me, though. I'm the boring kind of frustrated female...hate it when I don't get my daily dose... of emails!!

Sorry bout your emails!
So true, the last 12 months has seen example after example of nature giving us reminder after reminder of just how powerless we really are, despite our attempts at proving otherwise.

oh yeah, was having difficulty signing in in skype yesterday too. i thought somebody just messed up the connection preference so i just uninstalled and re-installed it. it worked after that. but could that also be related to all this sun flares thingy?
Oh, yes. That, too! I couldn't sign in the other day, with some strange other icon saying 'professional account'. What professional account??? I couldn't change it to online, so I logged out. Now can't get back in, as I don't recall teh password anyway. To request a new one, a reset will be sent to the yahoo email addy which I cannot access!!!
Sterling_Wollops: Oh if you only knew the truth of our little solar flare problems to come ... Set up your own communication system with friends and keep it analog
