There isn't much I can say to introduce this suject. It has been happening for a long time in the workforce and most likely won't ever change. I don't think it's fair but neither is life sometimes.

I personally was treated differently when I worked being that I was overweight and I think it's because employers thought I didn't respect myself and if I didn't respect myself, I probably didn't respect my job. That wasn't true as I loved my job, and somedays worked 10-11 hours a day as a legal assistant. No matter how hard I worked, I saw with my own eyes how thin assistants were treated with fairness, patience and courtesy.

I'm still a bit overweight and no matter where I go I believe I am treated differently then the woman who is thin whether it be in a doctor's office, the grocery line or just walking through a store.

I've been on CS many years and not too long ago I approached a gentlemen and he rejected me because he wants a slim woman. He is entitled to look for the kind of woman he wants but I have to tell ya, I was hurt to be rejected for such a shallow reason.

I'm betting that there are men and women on CS who once held executive positions, or management positions, and I'd like to hear from them if they ever denied a man or woman a job because that person was overweight..

You do have a point ,and its not only that over weighted folks are discriminated, but this is a good topic to start with...

There have been studies done about thin attractive people moving ahead faster in their careers over their less attractive counterparts.

As my mother has told me for as long as I can remember "who ever said life was fair?".

I've seen this happen not only in employment but dating as well.

I suppose some and I only mean some people don't seem to realize that someone regadless of gender do have a brain.Their body size shouldn't make a differnce but unfortuantely it does.

I've rejected on height grounds. I'm shortmanphobic.

I'm shallow and I'm not going to change that for a short guy.

First, I don't see you as being over weight and if this is as big as you've been in your life, then I think you have some paranoia, sista!

This topic reminds me of a cute story of my daughter. She graduated from Oklahoma University in 2005 (a very good university)
She and a girlfriend moved to Las Vegas to get jobs and live their lives single and full of adventure. She obtained a job with a company there. The day before her first day, the boss of this company called everyone in his office to tell them, that he had hired a "white girl from Oklahoma". Now that is funny!

wave I'm not implying that you are shallow Libra because you would reject a short man. The thread is about the business world. I probably shouldn't have written about my experience with being rejected in the personal world. wine

First of all, I don't see you as overweight at all. And if you are as big as you have ever been, then I think a little paranoia is going on, sista!

That's the bit I picked up on, on account of not being in the workforce. I have no point of reference for the rest of it.

Good topic.
I dont agree as it from my experience it is more the opposite.
My Aunt is very overweight, she is an Exective in Zurich.
Has climbed the ranks regardless of her weight.
I think it really is simply down to individualism.

I never said we should, but I believe that the preference for attractive over unattractive people in any area of life is ingrained so deeply in us that most people don't even realize they are doing in.

To change something like this we first have to realize that we are even doing it.It's doubtful that anyone sets out to promote the skinny attractive employee quicker then the fat unattractive one.Mostly it's subconscious.

What does it matter if I'm as big as I've ever been. I've lost a lot of weight but I still have more to lose. My picture was taken in the summer of 2006. This isn't about paranoia, it's about an executive hiring a thin women with less experience then I have.
