Hearing the reports from the Uk of the closing of News of the World after 168 yrs of publishing due to the despicable and immoral actions of the company/its employees to obtain information via phone hacking of persons other than celebrities and MP;s. I would be interested in :-

What is the general consensus of the UK public of the way in which News Corporation, the owners of News of the World, acted in this scandal and the way they have swiftly closed down NOW??

Is there more, worse information to come from this situation? Your opinions, insights please?? conversing

Hello Newbie, from Queensland on the Gold Coast in Australia!
Are you by any chance a share-holder, a budding journalist, an English undergraduate, or motivated by nothing but a simple curiousity in a recent global news story?

Actually, I did not know that The News of The World had closed down!

They used to be a respected newspaper at one time, until they began trawling in the gutters of the world for the salacious?
The worst newspaper over here in England is possibly (according to opinion) The Sun, as a rule of thumb they seem to take a delight in agitating social divides and stirring up negatively prejudicial public opinion among the vulnerable and easily swayed (?). The Government here probably adore them for the political juice that can be squeezed out of such story-tellings (?)!

Do you have the same or a similar disreputable (?) Newspaper in your country; that you might like to tell us about?

Well as I said earlier News of the World have been skating on thin ice for years with they seedy stories you had to think that eventually their luck would run out.

The phone tapping I guess was the last straw, still find it odd that Reebah Brooks, or wot ever her name who is! the acting editor has escaped being questioned hmmm that sounds a bit sust!dunno all very confusing the Tabloids world, and anyway after Sunday that will be one less Sunday paper for you to choose from I guess.

Hi NewLife.. wave

Yes, there will be more to come.. conversing

Question Time was on last night and Hugh Grant was there, (he came over quite well), and with his past, he has had visits from the Police, who informed him that the private detective, Glenn Mulcaire, who seemingly done the phone tapping, gave his information to all the papers, not just NOTW... uh oh

Also Andy Coulson is now out on bail regarding police bribery..

This will run for a good while, and one must now wonder how many past legal cases will be affected, (up here it specifically concerns Tommy Sheridan, who was sent to prison, based on what the NOTW provided as evidence, I believe)...

For more details, you can read it on the beeb..

cool

Hi newlife. An interesting topic you choose. Being an australian you may have views on news international and the way they proceed in there business practices. As i write this rupert murdoch is in midair and on his way here to london. To see what else no doubt he can salvage from a disasterous few days for him and his operation. I think he in particular should be very worryed indeed at how things are and could turn out for news international as an entitity and not just the ongoings at the NOTW. For instance-the cancer that has been that paper only up until now, spreading through other parts of his empire. I dont just mean his other newspapers either. I expect trouble ahead for him in his overseas operations too. Like in the U.S and yes australia as well. This saga could quite easily be the beginning of the end for the whole murdoch empire. His name and his companys brand name is in the gutter now in terms of perception. I just wonder how long he actualy believes the smell coming from these shores wont turnup on the otherside of the atlantic for example. Eitherway i believe that the political influence and economic power his company has in this country is over. So now blood has been spilled how long before his enemies(and list them)will wait before going in for the kill,so to speak,is anyones guess. But eventually they will and i believe this is just the start. The empire has taken its first hit and it wont be the last. You can betcha bottom dollar on that!grin uk

Hi everyone and thanks for your interesting replies! I was born in UK, came here 25 yrs ago so have a foot in both camps so to speak but I am more up to scratch with the Aussie side of things these days.

No Australia doesn't seem to have the same concentration of media ownership as in UK. We definitely don't have the trashy NOTW type newspapers.

A friend of mine has put the theory forward that RM (Murdoch) has been wanting The Sun to be a 7-days a week newspaper for years and this has given him the perfect opportunity to cut the NOTW loose?? Kind of makes sense?

I feel the people on the ground at NOTW to have the rug pulled from under them, probably most of them had nothing directly to do with the latest scandals. Especially in the economic times in UK/Europe jobs not in abudance.

Hooroo fell CS's - be good to share your thoughts and keep up with this unfolding story??

Hey N, I would have thought a lot of the staff working for NOTW would have been also working for The Sun too so don't think it would have been doom & gloom for them all!! ..eh?

Oh dear, just when you thought it couldn't get any worse - it just did!

Oh how the mighty fall?? It seems to be coming apart at the seams for RM and News Corp?? Wonder what they will find in the US when they start digging??

Looks like BskyB is safe from Ruperts grubby hands?

What's the old saying "Power corrupts and absoloute power corrupts absoloutely"?

The public gets what the public wants. Where there is a public yearning for the seedy secrets and the ins and outs of the famous, and not so famous, the media gets the stories every which way it can. I think these trasy gossip magazines and newspapers are fit for nothing. Browsing round the women's magazines shelves you can see there is a market for gossip.

Lets be clear about this ... News International and its collection of newspapers (yes, including the Sunday Times which was propped up by the earnings of the NOTW ..) is NOT the only organisation involved in phone hacking and paying the cops bungs to get information -- you can be sure that other papers have been doing this also, and hopefully this will come out in the wider investigation .....

It also sounds to me like Ms Brookes must have something on the Murdochs for her to still be in her job as chief exec of NI, as most of this seemed to happen on her shift.... I'd be interested to know what though innocent

Yep and since then rupert murdoch has made a grovelling apology to minnie dowlers parents too. The rebecca brooks saga still puzzles me though. I mean this is the same r.murdoch who on his arrival said 'his being here was to protect miss brooks?' Now he seems quite happy to let her resign her position. And in doing so,look like a jerk! It begs the question why now and not last week? If he really believed he was forever powerful enough for his arrogance on keeping her. Or like ive already thought and concluded she must of had something on him. Now though, with a huge payout from the murdochs no doubt, she is allowed to leave? It doesnt make sense! Not for someone with a supposedly shrewd business acumen it doesnt. But there again,at the age of eighty he might of lost that talent. What next? James murdoch is also made to resign. And there is evidence of phone hacking of 9/11 victims. In which case,he really is in the brown stuffdoh grin

I agree with most of what you say Wow, It is of no interest to me if Victoria Beckham pops out to get the milk with - shock horror - no make up. Or ....... (insert name of married, famous footballer) is having an affair.

But where I think the News Corp/and or the rest of the Media have crossed the line is in the hacking of mobile phones of victims of crime for example. It is just immoral, unethical and illegal (as far as I know) to listen into/record a conversation without a person's permission/knowledge?

If it has been going on and is considered a part of investigative journalism then it should stop right now. It adds to our fears of 'privacy' when handing over information whether it be to the banks, driving licences anywhere that holds your personal and private details.

Add to it certain police officers allegedly accepting payments for private information, maybe not doing a thorough investigation, covering up illegal activities then we are in a right mess.

It comes down to power, News Corp was all powerful, even senior politicians were kow towing to RM because this organisation (and others) could make or break a career, reputations, get you out of government etc. It should have been pulled into line before it ever got this far.

Have a good weekend folks teddybear

Of course they cross the line in those instances but people buying the papers because of that are also 'at fault' as it were in their peverse interest in reading the secrets of victims - secrets obtained by hacking. It is disgusting and sickening isn't it?

You too have a good weekend - nice to see someone here from outside the UK by the way. I know it's winter there but it seems like winter here. Grey sky and windy, unusual for July but our Easter temperatures broke records in the mid to high 20s.

Maybe newsrags/trashy magazines should be made to put something like "Ms. xxxx was paid for this interview/information or this information was obtained without the consent or knowledge of xxxx"??

At least we would know if the person concerned gained or benefited from us knowing that he/she slept with ????? and what kind of aftershave he wears??

Yes, it is 'winter' here but Australia is a huge country (as big as the whole of mainland Europe) and so within its boundaries has various climates at the same time. WE've got places that have snow right now, yep, real snow - and places in the north that are basking in winter temps of around 30C.

Be happy wave
