What do you think about this quote?

"Never do or say something that you wouldn't want to be in the first paragraph of your obituary."

Peeps say things on here that I doubt they would say to the person if they were face to face with them.

If you are being careful of what you say, whether on CS or to the grocery store clerk, is that a form of censorship or are you remembering that your parents taught you to be respectful to your fellow man even when you don't agree with their opinion?
..hug

I agree with you Boom. It's not only about opinions. People just don't treat each other with respect. If they knew that their sarcasism or arrogance was the first line of their obitiuary, how would they feel if that turned out to be their legacy.

Unfortunately there probably are people on here who would not hesitate in saying what they thought to your face Monti.

So many have posted threads about how to behave to each other on the threads, myself included, but doubt any of us can make others be more reasonable. We are such a diverse bunch of people, and diversity has it's good side too.hug

I try not to hurt people's feelings but sometimes I find it difficult to keep my mouth shut (fingers off the keyboard) when I see certain things going on ... maybe I am a little blunt at times. I do see some very hurtful things said on here and wonder if those people have any idea of exactly who they are talking to. We non of us know who is behind the keyboard or why people are on this site and making fun of people is cruel and shows why those people who are cruel are alone ..

The thing is BB, when we were children our parents taught us manners, one of them to be respectful, regardless of who you are talking to. I think you are correct that because peeps are behind a computer screen they feel they can say anything even if they know it will hurt someones feelings.

I posted in a thread yesterday. Someone responded saying "people like you make me sick". He didn't use a laughing emote so I didn't take it as a joke. I wonder if he would have said that if I was standing right in front of him.

It's not about keeping your mouth shut Lerie, it's about being respectful. You can disagree with someone and still be respectful. People need to think before they act.

Any time you make a decision to not say something, for any reason, you are exercising self-censorship. The label given to those few people who do not practice self-censorship is Tourettes.

wave Two wrongs don't make a right Manroe. Suppose you say something harsh to the clerk who didn't put your groceries in the bag the way you like it and the next day your family is writing your obituary. The first sentence reads: Manroe told the clerk to get with the program and do her job right. Is that how you want to be remembered?

The point is Monti that some of us are from a different generation, therefore find it difficult to understand that not all people have respect for each other. It's about striking a balance.

I have learned over the years on C.S. to accept this fact and try hard not to lose control when posting to aggressive comments,or turn the other cheek and walk away. The aggressor may feel they have won the point, but in fact they have lost the argument.j.m.o

Some people simply do not make a habit of using cartoon emoticons to illustrate what they have typed. Particularly when the intended IRONY of the remark was self-evident in the statement being made.

I'm sorry that you weren't able to grasp the humor of my ironic comic, and I'm most sorry that I forgot somebody had mentioned you're currently recovering from some sort of painful surgery. I think it's quite possible that you're experiencing too much personal discomfort at the moment to be able to detect subtle humor involving obvious irony. If that is the case then I apologize.

However, if you cared to investigate, you would find that I happen to be a person who almost never feels the need to use emoticons, and I'm going to change my writing style just because some people are incapable of grasping the meaning of what I write without tiny cartoon illustrations.

Just think about this please. The reason CS has emotes is because it's difficult to know when someone is joking because these are only words on a computer screen. Emotes put feeling into the comment. If you had used some sort of silly emote, this thread never would have been written.. professor <------ Shows I'm serious.

In my opinion moticons are a good way to clarify the intent of the person. You may be misunderstood without them. JMO
