We all have our own moral compasses, depending on our own personal and unique experiences. Defining ourselves based on them is what we do to interact in society. For some needle flicker is barely moving, they are aware of what they will accept and what they will give. They are grounded in their own personal beliefs. However, for others , the needle will swing backwards and forwards rather erratically depending on what mood has taken them. They profess one thing, and their actions indicate otherwise.
Often we say that we want honesty from people. Wasn't it Billy Joel who said that 'honesty is a lonely word'? We tell white lies so we don't hurt feelings, so we don't crush someone's illusion. We are diplomatic, we are politic... this is how life is. It's interesting for me that when someone professes they are honest, and their actions indicate otherwise, that when you call them on it , they have to put the fault back onto you.
Strangely all you expected was honesty... and yet, they never abdicated their throne for a moment... they live believing that they are always right.
In an amusing movie with Jim Carey, he was forced to tell the truth for a day, and all sorts of faux pas' occurred. However , in the end, this helped him realise exactly how his lies affected others.
When we ask for honesty, we are asking for someone to be true to themselves. We should be able to like someone for themselves, faults inclusive.

yea, some just can't handle honesty, i guess... ...you know, there are no people perfect...excepting that is half the battle...
But the OP was right in that we most of us tell white lies all the time..things like "No, darling your bum doesnt look big in that", or "No, I dont think what you said was out of order", or "Yes, I agree that mini skirt looks classy"..
Ecetera, ecetera, ecetera..
the better thing to say would be, no, that mini skirt would look better OFF of you...but it has to be said with a devilish grin

Throw out what you think is a question with what you think has a concrete answer. We'll see where we go w/it?
Bodecia: I get your point, FF, but I dont think that was what I was trying to say in my previous post.
Anyone who would state that they have NEVER told a white lie in order to spare someone's feelings would, in my opinion, be telling porkies..
It's not unlike a man or woman saying they're looking for bla bla bla bla bla bla in a relationship. They get exactly what they asked for...then they determine, well...that's not exactly what I wanted.
