I often listen to music in my car, or in my home, while I am going through the motions of being a domestic Goddess. Music really helps set the mood for me. If I find I need to change my mood, I simply change CDs. I am certain my next door neighbours will forgive the need for me to share the tunes with them. So yes, I like to listen to it loud...WHEN I am alone.

What I can thank the internet for is the introduction to musical talent that I may never have had the opportunity to listen to. Many years ago, there were a group of girls that would chat in a Yahoo room that I would go into ... ( wow I know... the infamous Yahoo chat rooms of old) we used to share music through a program called Cheetachat. Without that exposure I may never have discovered Dave Matthews. I had to own his CD "Crash" after hearing him, and at the time, the country town I lived in just didn't have any of his music... I had to order it in. With time, my music experience has changed and now with YouTube, you can experience music that you simply didn't have at your fingertips when you were teenagers. We were exposed to popular radio music, which was quite limited.

I have become a fan of ordering music CD's online It's like Christmas going to my front door and discovering a parcel I had forgotten I ordered weeks earlier.I couldn't obtain a CD anywhere else, so I ordered the CD and paid dearly for it months ago. They sent me another CD to promote another artist. I have now been introduced to Malea Mc Guinness ... I am going to share the song here. But I would love to hear how the internet has impacted your exposure to music.

(My apologies for the quality of the music video, I could not find one better on Youtube, although for a better link, I suggest this )

When you fall you're not alone, where you go someone will follow
In these times that make you stronger, there is a message when it's all over
So time will be your friend, it will help you start again

I've been on the edge, but I don't let go
I was lost for so long, but time will always show
You're not alone, time will always show

Too proud too bend, too poor to break
You've weathered all the storms that they can make
And you laugh so hard to keep from crying
There's something in you that can't give up trying

So time will be your friend, It will help you start again

I've been on the edge, but I don't let go
I was lost for so long, but time will always show you're not alone
Time will always show oh yeah yeah, time will always show

You hang within an inch of your life, You are fighting just to survive
Hope is close but yet so far away..hey,hey,hey
I've been on the edge, but I don't let go
I was lost for so long, but time will always show

They think they've won, I know you and they don't know you're not alone
Ooh that time will always show

Yes, times have changed in Music. We tend to remember older songs because that’s what we grew up with. I’ve stated this before and I believe in it…We are on the verge of a new era of Music…call it the 3rd Generation of Current Musical Events that we now experience.

Most of us have experienced the Great Masters of Music, created by Beethoven and other German influences with what we modernize in our times and listen to; in Visual Quality.

Hello John,

Your examples of these changes are brilliant. We live in a world where we have better access to music than we ever did. I still recall as a teenager that boom boxes were all the rage. The fact that you could put batteries into these bulky boxes and then head outside , hang with friends and listen to music was brilliant... of course it evolved to the portable CD player and now the Ipod's ... making music even more accessible. I was at a party last year where they used an amplifier to share someone's Ipod music... and I really enjoyed that. Often I feel with ipods that only the listener gets to enjoy the music.

There is no doubt that you are more experienced in the area of music than I am... I can simply make my own observations based on my limited knowledge. It seems for me that just when I fall in love with a new artist , another one arrives ... I wonder if one day they will find me as an old lady , passed away quietly amongst a huge pile of CDs and books. That might be a perfect finale for me.

Music is a progression of thoughts, ideas and the hopes in life that we all have. I remember the old 8 track tapes we purchased in the 70’s, and how they only lasted for 100 plays or so until the tape broke. These were only audio, not visual.

The most successful new Music today is recorded live because most people want to see the Bands that way – visual along with audio. With the HD and HQ technologies that we have today, it’s the most enjoying. The cause and effect of this 3rd Generation of Music is that most Musicians now have to produce and play live concerts, well beyond their middle age years, to sell recordings.

The invention of youtube has made these great Artists available to the Public. It’s free to us and the Musicians can promote upcoming Concerts and new videos, and the older ones can live on with new meaning.

Which is why we have artists like Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Jimmy Barnes, Tina Turner still out there rocking their stuff. I love how occasionally they have re-unions and these big names get together, or for the sake of charity. I am not sure you are familiar with Jimmy, so I thought I would share a clip... He is big here.

I don't recall the 8 tracks by the way, I do remember record players... and being told that we had to stop 'jumping' around them. And of course, my brother used to play Kiss constantly on his. Which was a huge difference from Dad's country and Mum's opera.

YouTube's impact on me personally has been anything but free... I order music more now than I ever have at any point in my life. Yesterday alone I received another five CD's on my doorstep. I believe in supporting the artist, and of course, it gives me a brilliant choice to listen to in my car, or in my home.

I can imagine as a musician you look through the last few years and see all the fine tuning in the industry... but that has to be exciting, being inside and seeing the mechanisms churning.

Hello again John,

Recently Australia upgraded it's television networks across the country... with that I had to upgrade my television and the free TV gave us more channels. To put this in perspective, we had five channels locally before the change. After the change, one of my favorite moments was finding the old TV shows, Happy Days being one of them!! ( Of course, there was also "Are you being served", "Bewitched"... many of the shows that I hadn't seen since I was a child)

One of the guys at work was recently telling me that he has a juke box in his home...Now that sounds like a brilliant idea!

it's great the way some music picks you up and makes you feel good - I find putting on my most loved music when I feel down actually does make me feel better.

Agree that getting the cd in the mail is great but my niece who is a musician reminded me that a lot of small music retailers are going out of business because of it - and it's the local independent retailers who promote local bands and that is where the music feeds up from. If you can buy at a local independent record store please support local musicians by doing so - here endeth the lesson for today teddybear

I believe,( living in a country town) that we should support any local businesses. However, this is why I order online now... Firstly, because I work long hours, shift work...so I don't have time. BUT secondly, I only started to do this when the local music store closed down, so now... we only have chain retailers. I had always supported the locally owned store, but having me as a customer was not enough to keep them in business.

I do not as a rule copy music though... I do have music that my friends have copied for me, but I continue to support the artists by buying their music.

I completely agree that music can be mood altering. I find that if I put rock music in my car, I have a higher risk of getting speeding fines.grin

John, I may say this badly...but what I like about that generation is how 'pure' the music was. The lyrics were simple, easy to sing along to... and the melodies were simple You could simply enjoy the music without having to analyse the intention of the artist.

Thank you for sharing.

You didn't say it badly at all Abagail. You are correct. Most Music is to be simple and sang along with; and now some want to make this complicated. (IE, the record companies}.

Many Musicians are made to comply with their recording companies by contract. Money and lawsuits are the issue most of the time and many Bands switch allegiance to another record czar or form their own record label.

Record companies require and force Musicians to record on a strict timetable. They want quantity, not the quality of what the Bands can offer (Money}.

The Beatles are a good example. They were strictly forced by record companies to produce 2 albums and a certain amount of singles per year; hence The Beatles formed their own company, Apple records.

The Beatles wrote this song to express their frustrations to EMI and Capital Records. The Beatles first Manager, Brian Epstein, committed suicide over this.

This is extremely rare:

Incredibly the band is still one of the most popular in the world four decades after they were touring. I know very little about the history of music... In fact, I know very little about music, other than what I have stumbled upon for reading. I know culturally it's important.

The business side of the industry sounds rather cut throat. I just went to have a quick look at the conception of the business, it seems it began in the year of my birth ( laugh I wonder if that will help me retain the information for further application) and it is still a viable business.

So, do you believe that we should expect more from the artists? Because it seems historically there were some brilliant ones that just worked together and seemed to succeed effortlessly... like the Beatles. However, now reading what you just typed, it seems there was more going on behind closed doors than I was ever aware of.

I believe this is where I give you an 'apple' and sit in rapt attention , awaiting the next lesson, John?!

Usually studio recordings are reserved for friends of the Bands and other popular and contemporary Musicians. Examples are that The Beatles allowed The Rolling Stones into Apple Studios to watch or play with them and also the band Pink Floyd to record the album Dark Side of the Moon.
