The free ones are good when you don't go on line. You will be better off by bying one, every time i got one for free i got all the viruses that they exist on line.

The new AVG has some serious faults. One of these is that when it updates (monthly) it 'forgets' about older viruses and can only deal with new ones. Older viruses are no longer recognised as threats and can enter your system undetected and cause havoc.

Rummy, try Avast... it's free, simple, doesn't slow down your machine and keeps you well protected.

Hi, Rummy

I use Avast- avast.com. It found several viruses my paid-for program missed. No problems so far

AVG, avira, panda are some of the antivirus that are freely downloadable. With AVG, I have had bad experience with some virus not been detected by that s/w.

If you are fully opting for free antivirus, I recommend you go for two layer protection, which I have been successfully using in one of my system, Panda + Lava soft. This works pretty good too and I have been using this without any glitches for almost 1 year now on my home PC.

My laptop, I am using Eset antivirus (paid version) (this one is really light on your system resources and detect every threat out there..from my personal experience). Another layer I use in my laptop is Lavasoft free s/w.

Hope this post was helpful

Hi Rummy,
Best freebie measures:
Use Microsoft Essentials - free & lightweight!
Onlinr Armor - free, good firewall!
Don't use IE as your web browqser - rather use FF!
You can run FF in "Sandbox" mode, even better! professor cheers grin

store all you valuable documents on a computer which isn`t connected to the internet ,
On the computer which is connected on the net, well you can try out from a list of free antivirus programs( change them once a month) and see which one works the best for you , I would also recommend a good anti-spy malware ,trojan ,program, like
Malwarebytes or Spybot - Search & Destroy -RemoveIT Pro 4 SE

malwarebytes and spybot are good. I've also used zonealarm which is good because it blocks any program on your computer from accessing the internet without your permission.
If you get hit with a rootkit (very serious infection which most anti-virus programs can't remove)hit it with "Combofix" In fact you should download combofix and just keep it on your PC for when you need it.
Finally, there's a company that makes a whole suite of free programs (they also have pro versions) called "iobit". Since I found iobit I dont use anything else.

To be able to choose whether or not to buy software, or use a free version... you need to understand how they all work.

1) Whatever software you run... if it's up to date, it's working.

2) Someone releases a virus to the internet

3) ALL the different companies scramble to come up with an update

4) That update is automatically downloaded onto your computer, making you safe from *that* virus.

Now... in the time that it took the developers to come up with the *fix*... you were vulnerable to the virus. ALL the different software companies work the same way... and NONE of them can catch every single virus, so...

Why *buy* something that has NO GUARANTEE to stop *everything*? dunno

I used to use AVG until they added so much extra crap to it that it started to slow down customers computers.

I now use Avast (free version) on my own computer... as well as on those I repair and/or build.

If you use the following software once a month... you will *stay* as clean and free from viruses and other malware as you can be, AND, your computer will run faster and more efficient.

- Malwarebytes Anti Malware
- Spybot Search and Destroy
- Adaware
- Iobit Advanced System Care

It doesn't matter *what* you use... as long as you are using *something* applause

Dear Libra, I have also used avast and have had no problems with it . I was also told by a person that should know about these things that the paid version realy isn't that much better than the free one . You just have to renew it every six mounths .

officedepot can give you technical support and virus protection as low as 15/mo. Only regarding software issues. You can cancel their services anytime.Your manufacturer's computer website usually has troubleshooting steps on how ro fix your computer if off warranty.
I fixed mine with an issue all by myself that even my provider could not figure out.
good luck

wave Hi ooby!
I too use ALL of the iobit Free products...
Advanced System Care Free
Malware Fighter
Smart Defrag

I also use AVG Free Edition AND Lavasoft's Ad-Aware.
I use Eusing Free Registry Cleaner once a month, it cleans up what Advanced System Care misses.

I install ALL of these programs on the computers I work on, along with a file on the desktop explaining how often to run them. No complaints from my customers so far.

The ones who return with problems are the ones who Never run the maintenance programs!

I do run Zone Alarm on one of my computers and have not had any problems with it, it's great for XP and works much like the program that comes with Vista, which I run in another computer.

I used to run MalwareBytes but had an issue with it so I removed it and went to using iobit.

I would Never use McAfee or Norton. In fact, I remove them from my customers computers.

Most of these programs can be downloaded from the manufacturers website or majorgeeks.

Hope this helps,
HL
