I read this story earlier today, and I don´t think the woman is "dumb" as you say. Gullible, lonely....perhaps, but she is a millionairess, unlike many women who end up penniless after being ripped off by a romantic con merchant, so I won´t shed any tears for her.

Do you remember Onassis' daughter? Poor rich girl? I still remember that tragic story of her life. Every man she ever met was after her money and having been in the media, there was no way for her to go out and live a normal life and at least pretend to be "reasonably poor".
The one thing I would criticise this woman for though is the fact that she did not do a prenup. The fact that he didn't ask her for money or didn't mention her wealth means only that he was smart. He knew rich people just wait for someone to mention money to expose them as gold diggers, so he didn't. Besides, I doubt he gets anything after only 2 years in the way of maintenance. Still, she was dumb not to have at least done a prenup and to check his background. Tsk.
Do I feel sorry for her? No. I'm sure she still has plenty in the bank to live comfortably. At some point, it is every person's responsibility to draw the line between being nice, giving and helpful and protecting one's own security and future financial wellbeing.

ooby_dooby: I can't help thinking if she was on CS instead of POF, and participated in our forums, this fate would never have befallen her. There are enough experienced scam busters on here, both men and women, who could have helped her see through this guys plot, which BTW was planned from day one IMO.

In an ideal world where altruism is valued moreso than the size of one's wallet, I'd agree with you. It is what I said in that sentence after the one highlighted that counts. Of course it is not okay to hurt someone's feelings esp. not when it's about love, but again, I say that each of us is also responsible for our own financial wellbeing.
When she spent 30K Pounds on him, I'm sure she gave it freely and willingly, but his mentality might be one where he despises her for the way she can spend so much money. In his country, it is obscene to be so rich... and many people in poor countries think nobody should sit on millions and not share the wealth when there are people who don't have enough to eat or don't know how to make it through the winter.
Those guys see wealthy western men/women with a totally different set of eyes that even poor westerners see them. Women and men often forget that. ... just thinking here, you know...

Just as well she isn't residing in Australia it's something like 6 months living with someone and you are entitled to some of that persons assets crazy isn't it

Exactly. He could want out for totally different reasons and we don't hear his side of the coin. Even if she did something bad in the relationship, the fact that he asks for lifetime alimony points toward him trying to cash in. I often wonder how it is that people who marry wealthy celebrities walk away with such large settlements after short marriages.. methinks blackmail of some sort is involved), when at the same time, middle class people have no chance at all to get anything after a two year marriage.
