havent been eel fishing for a while, so i thought i,d go yesterday, caught a nice one, chopped it in half and ate it ,really nice tasted a bit like salmon i thought.
but i thought i,d go again today to the same spot, and because it had been raining, the eels had come out of the water and were sithering acrooss the paddock into a nearby lagoon,it was iinteresting as nthere were about fifty or so eels doing it ,quite big too.Has anone seen this happen?i actually grabbed a big one and chopped its head off and took it home, and i,m eating it for tea now ,its yummy

Yes lve seen it happen before, on one of the properties my parents worked on. The dam broke its banks from so much rain and the paddocks were flooded and they were travelling through the cow tracks. I went eeling with my brother for several days in a row, we were bringing a full sack home each day.
Another time on another property the creek flooded due to all he rain in the mountains surrounding this property and it washed down a heap of huge yabbies, we just walked throught the creek picking up yabbies, they were everywhere and they were the best yabbies we ever tasted. We were able to that for 3 days, we lived off yabbies and had plenty in the freezer. Never saw it happen again though.

i barbequed them ,a lot of grease coes out, but they are nice and filling, you have to bang a two inch nail through their head onto a bit of wood, and make a small cut around their head, then grab a flap of skin with a pair of pliers, and pull, and all the skin comes off in one long sac.dog doesnt like em though.

Well how about that, because this big eel i caught had about four yabbies in its stomache,so they would be a good bait.i used scrub worms and a piece of dead rabbit, ive just been reading up about short fined eels, apparently there is only two places in the world that they breed, one in the sargasso sea,and one near fiji,They live their lives in rivers, and after a few years they head down stream to the sea and breed in those areasand young ones come bac up the rivers and go across land to get into creeks and ponds etc,and the cycle begins.and i was reading that in some places in europe ,they catch the young elvers[baby eels],and make fish cakes out of them

Several people have reported a giant eel in the Yarra river near Warburton. He is reported to have taken a Jack Russel dog, a goose that someone was feeding at the time, and a fisherman was dragged into the water in April 2005 by something huge and unknown, most like the giant eel.

I've seen the eels migrate as well, it is how they move from water source to water source, usually after lots of rain as it is easier for them to move.

I havent eaten eels but I know some people go mad for them smoked. I can remember having someone travel up to Gippsland from the west side of Melbourne in our dam.
they caught 38 for the day and took them home and smoked them, they said it was a delicacy.

In NSW there is a park about 10 k out of Sutherland. Late afternoon after the rain, I’ve seen them come out of the water 20 meters maybe more searching around the bins for food .

yep, was the best way to grow up there was.

I have watched eels most of my life, at times the water of the dam used to look like it was "boiling" with eels as there were that many in there.

We used to catch them and put them in our well, but then we worked out they were actually eating all the gudgeons and sand trout we used to catch and keep in the same well... we were kids!
