My thoughts are with the residents too and it is great no lives have been lost. I know it was a controlled burn that caused the fire but l couldnt help but notice on the pictures in the news how many trees and how close they were to the houses that have been lost. Yes you live in bushland to enjoy the country side and the view but if l was lucky enough to have a home in the bush l would not have a tree within 30 metres of the house or shedding. JMO
And l agree 100% with Rocksmith what stupid person approved a controlled burn off with such weather conditions around doh

Fire is such a terrible thing, so devastating. I hope that the families and livestock will be safe.

I guess my question is this.... why would you do a controlled burn in spring, in fact just before summer hits? surely doing this in winter would be a better senario.

It is important for people to have made fire breaks around properties, ensure adequate water, pumps and water pressure. All too often people have gums and other highly combustable natives close to their homes. Truly there needs to be far greater education to ensure less loss, as we live in a country of fire and floods.

Yeah Faithe, you are so right. Its not just the landowner either, I remember reading somewhere that a guy got fined by the local shire for knocking down natives to create a fire break zone around his acerage house. Apparently they had rules in respect to land clearing that didnt consider firebreaks.

Seems that for some landowners they are up against it from all sides in trying to be responsible during fire season. They arent just battling the elements.doh

Fire, Flood, they are just leave such destruction in their wake.

I have no idea where the controlled burning started, whether it was deemed a safe enough distance away from the houses, but as others have noted, why not do this in cooler weather and without the strong northerly winds.

Now if it had been an arsonist, police would be hunting them down.

If its the guy l think your talking about he cleared a big fire break area around his house got a huge fine and was in the process of fighting it when last years horrible fires hit, he was the only one who didnt lose his house in the area...strange thing was the shire dropped the fines after the fires. Im not sure whether lm correct or not but since last years disaster l think you are now able to clear any tree including natives to make a fire break around your house...within reason of course.

yeah thats the one I remember too. Am so glad that a commonsense resolution was reached.

How ludicrous that major fires had to hit an area for Government to see sense. Just mind numbing isnt it.

I have a sixt foot river red gum only 5m from my house. I want to get rid of it(no, I didn't plant it!) as it's dangerous in every which way. Yet it is deemned a significant tree under current legislation, as it is wider than 2m diameter yadda yadda...before I can get it cut down I need to seek council permission, before than get a madly expensive arborist's report costing about $700, then council application fee, then await their decision.

Turns out the laws might change any tick of the clock and I may not need to go down this road, just get it cut down, which in itself will cost me about $2,300, lowest quote, more if I want them to dispose of the wood(wood chips I can keep for mulch).

Our laws don't make it easy sometimes, to keep lives and properties safe.
