I'd say the Syrian regime isn't unpopular with all Syrians and leave it at that, Ray.
There is a foreign influence upon the entire Arab spring, but it is a cultural influence - ours - so many Arabs, especially the young, do genuinely want to model their own nations upon Western nations. Not everything falls within some crude conspiracy.

Latest update from several sources here is that it's an attack by a single perpetrator, apparently a weapon freak and known by police and justice. He was out on parole.
There are no links with terrorist organizations or the Pakistani honor-killing trial that took place earlier.
No apparent motive was found yet.
