I am currently Training for a job that will increase my income by 1/3 yearly. The work that I am learning is very involved, and while I have knowledge of it from a Technical perspective, I am learning the "office" side of it. The person training me is for lack of a better work an "a**hole". He is lazy, non chalant, and a smartass. He is not proactive about anything, does not show me anything unless I ask, and will sometimes ask my opinion on any given subject (work related or not) to then shoot me down. Humble pie is being served to me daily!!!!

Question
I keep reminding myself of the long term goal, however, at the rate that I am going, I will not be proficient at this job anytime soon. I have thought of making it a point to my new Boss, but I don't want to rock the boat. I vent off to my old boss (within the same company) and he has offered his assistance, but I have told him to let me handle it.

No matter where you go, school or work, you'll come across people like this, or worse. Not only is school a place to learn the academics, it's a place to learn how to deal with people you can't stand.

Hopefully you won't be learning from this person for too long, and you'll move on to the next phase.

It's good to keep your long-term goals in mind.

I hope others here can offer real advice, all I can say is hang in there and Study!

Good luck

Let the one training you know that you're not a mindreader and that his proficiency exam score and pay raise (if your company has those) depends on how well you have learned the new things, and are performing while under probation. That could make all the difference.

If not, go to his boss and address your concerns, if you don't have time to do so easily, take a written approach and explain that you cannot perform your duties without knowing exactly what should be done. Detail it all top to bottom and you should either A) get a new trainer, or B) the current one will get an attitude adjustment by manager.

I have been around arrogant people before, but this is by far the worst. And to tell you the truth, he knows his job, I will definetly give him that, but other than that, he is a loser. Like I said, he always tries to bring me down. I am in no way intimidated by him, I have had several several conversations with him that end in "whatever".
If it wasn't at work, it would be a totally different story.

Just hang in there for the time being. Sounds to me like the guy is cutting his own throat - and probably a bit threatened by you, worried that you’re going to expose his inabilities or laziness.
Just keep forcing the guy to give you the answers you need, and ignore the way in which he chooses to answer them or provide the needed info. I’m sure at some point your boss is going to ask you how things are going for you…that’s when you make mention on how difficult the training has been going, and why.

Well if the training is for a couple of months, take the humble pie, and keep rolling, If the training is for a year, you need to sit down and talk to him. and let him know what is bothering you.

I would start off by telling him that you can see that he really knows his job. Then I would tell him that you would prefer if he would explain things to you more. You could always bring it on yourself, like say you need someone who will explain things rather than just learning by watching.Don't focus on his negatives when talking to him about this.Instead try to turn it on you.

tx for weighing in,
I have just started documenting my progress, great idea. As far as rocking the boat, I will probably lay low unless I am questioned or reprimanded for not knowing enough. The funny thing is that I have received really positive feedback from all the other people that I am working with, and I do have a great reputation within my company.
Tx for your help everybody.

Just to let you know, I am a man of action!!
I just had a "good" conversation with my "trainer"
I informed him that I would like to be an asset and that I felt like I was not being used to my full capability. He told me that he feels that I know alot, but that I just question myself to much.
I asked him for a way to gauge my progress, and he provided me with a checklist. I am reviewing it. I asked him that once I review it, I will tell him what I believe I am comfortable with, review that with him, and take a course of action regarding what he believes is the next step.peace
