The name of the sea may signify the seasonal blooms of the red-coloured Trichodesmium erythraeum near the water's surface.

The derivation of the Hebrew name for Red Sea, Yâm-Sûph is uncertain. The meaning of Sûph is probably "reeds", and the title Yâm-Sûph (Sea of Reeds). More uncertain still is the derivation of the Greeko-Roman name, Erythræan (or Red) Sea. It has been variously explained by
1. The red corals it contains;
2. The colour of the Edomite and Arabian Mountains, bordering its coasts;
3. The glow of the sky reflected in its waters;
4. The word edom (red), which the Greeks may have rendered literally;
5. The name of King Erythras, who reigned in the adjacent country.

i was told that it was originally the Reed Sea, and in ancient
