There's nothing new about that.
It's been going on for at least a century.
But it doesn't necessarily mean making them less intelligent.

People who don't believe in the illuminati, Zionist control, the US government staging 9/11, UFO's carrying aliens, 12/12/12 or whatever conspiracy theory is fashionable this week are asleep. Of course, it wouldn't occur to those who accuse their fellow citizens of this that they themselves might just be ever so slightly wrong.
