Yesterday I came across a website for house building kits. They deliver to your block of land and pieces stacked in order of usage...You undergo an owner builder course, which then qualifies you to build it yourself, and the kit comes with a manual.

Apparently, it's like building one very big Meccano set. You just follow the steps. Each piece is clearly numbered, and corresponds with the plan diagram. Simples....Yeah right!rolling on the floor laughing

Yet, as ridiculous as it sounds, I can't help being tempted. I think that would be the ultimate challenge, for someone like me who has only ever played with jigsaw puzzles and lego when my son was little.doh

Why do we do want to do these things to ourselves?... Anyone here taken on a challenge so big, but went on to successfully finish it?
Or if you didn't finish it, what happened?

I gave a guy a hand to put together a kit home long time ago. Real pain, was steel frame doh when completed was noisy, every time cloud appeared roof contracted, sun came out expanded. Then council insisted they poison the ground right around the whole house for white ants so they sold it to some other mug. In all whole project was a nightmare

Right now, I'm adjusting to the end of daylight saving which kicked in this morning - I woke up early, dammit.doh

I know what you mean. I've had pieces missing , holes not aligned...
Years ago, I stayed up 'til the wee hours of the night to figure out a really complicated(for me) knitting stitch. It had become a battle b/w the animate and inanimate. I worked it out around 3am.

So, does it boil down to wanting to get rid of the frustration that comes with the challenge, or to overcome the challenge itself?

Boy, some challenge, Rob! Well done to you and your friend. Bugga about the steel expanding etc. I know that's a complaint that apparently has been addressed by the steel frame home companies, in the way the pieces interlock, or something.

So where to from here now that you've conquered some a major challenge? Everything else might pale into insignificance.

(Now I know who to turn to if I ever go down that path. It would be well worth putting you up in a hotel for 2 months!!laugh)

p.s. to share in epi's comment...Some white ants you got there!!! uh oh laugh

Why would anyone want to build a house which doesn't comply with such fundamentals is crazy, not just about keeping councils happy, but the bloomin thing could fall to bits.doh

By the way, Rob and epi, in regards to the kit I'm talking about, they are manufactured by a company call pal with a double 'aa'. If you get a chance to look it up, let me know what you think, and if you've heard of it? dunno ...Ta.handshake

oh Zing-alum roof contracts and expands the whole time, but his steel frame made a lot of noise the whole time to.
More so its a pain to deal with councils period, most councils have relationship with the Chamber of Commerce who only interest is its members, money bags, they Safety Act and all sorts of crap to shore up there members interests

The house they built was a kitset , guess they did not read from the start of the book . The house was a round "hay shed" type with lots of timber around both ends . Real nice looking place . The whole floor had to be broken up and relayed .Rising damp was the problem for the council , stuff their luck .

found Paal homes , even the little one seemed a good size . Not heard of them .Lockwood in Aus I think, may be by another name, there is a cheap copy of it made the same way with one board on another edge ways . It has a wide range of outside cladding as battens are put on to fix outside cladding to , unlike Lockwood as it's boards are already clad . The company supplies a dvd with the kit and can/and likes to do the foundations where most people find hard .Unlike the Lockwood the sun does not shine on the inside wall and does not spend all night creaking like a Lockwood . Same company sells both here .

I havent seen the kit for them, but there is a display home near here for Paal and they certainly are a great looking finished product.

If you are looking for something a little different in the kithomes, and it could look more like a dog kennel laugh have a look at Ral homes. A different concept and it does look fairly easy as well, until you have to put a window in the side that is!

Insulating take a bit, not my cup of tea Jem.
Prefer good solid poles notched out with trusty chain saw to accommodate solid timber beams being then firmly bolted together.
Rose wood or similar secret nailed flooring, with a veranda right round the whole building

I was an expert at meccano at nine! By 15 I was showing my dad up when it came to welding and building patios, when I was 25 I worked as a subcontractor building patios sheds and second story additions, I had to do a mechanical aptitude test for a job once and I got a 98% score! The highest you could get as the first question was a test question so it was impossible to score more than 98%?

Unfortunately, inside the city zones here in the west, you cant build your own homes?

Maybe when I retire I will go out into the seaside country towns up north and build my own home?
