Farm gate milk prices have remained fairly strong since 2010-11 on the back of international demand for dairy products. 2010-11 opening farm gate prices were in the range of 34 to 36 cents per litre and closed at around 41 cents per litre. 2011-12 opening farm gate prices are around 37 cents per litre.

Scott Lord, from one of the biggest dairy cow auctioneers, Dairy Livestock Services, says animals are selling for more than $2,000.

The number of dairy farms has fallen by two-thirds over the last three decades from 22,000 in 1980 to just below 7,000 in mid-2011.
