memory_alpha: There is no question that religion has been a huge contributor to violence since recorded time, but truthfully, it's not been the only one. The acquisition of land and wealth as well as ideas and politics have contributed as well. Without religion I think there would be less violence, but it does not account for all.

Most wars have been a result of tribalism in the macro form ... ie nations (geo political or religions) On a micro scale you can see it amongst football clubs where the animosity occasionally leads to violence.
