ziggy67: If there was no religion, would the world be at peace. ???
No it would never and could never be at peace without religion. its what holds most people together. the only reason some countries are divided by it is because there are religions that clash. or there are the so called religions that kill others to get to "heaven".

Obstinance_Works: I think for every 1 high IQ'd and philosophically inclined sophisticrat whose intellect is liberated by atheism there are 10, 20, 30 debauched souls amongst those that still need communal faith. The sophisticrats don't get this, they don't understand why our atheist world is lower in intellectual total than what came before, and this is because atheism is a mere stones throw away from autism and aspergers.
Jesus Christ I agree with you!!!!!!!!!Praise the Lord.
The most dangerous madmen are those created by religion, and ... people whose aim is to disrupt society always know how to make good use of them on occasion. -- Denis Diderot, Conversations with a Christian Lady (1777), repr. in Lester G Crocker, ed, Selected Writings, ed. (1966), quoted from The Columbia Dictionary of Quotations

AgentAjax: so who has the right interpretation according to you, obviously you must have one in mind to make such a bold statement. if majority oh people misinterpreted the bible or whatever wouldn't that still make religion wrong because of this on going problem?
That's the whole point though, isn't it?!
According to me? There is no right interpretation.....'according to me'!
And, no, I don't have any particular religion in mind.
People are the 'ongoing problem', not religion. That's just my opinion, which I am entitled to. That doesn't mean its right or wrong.
Sounds like you just want to be contentious for argument's sake. Sorry, I can't warrant the time nor energy....
memory_alpha: There is no question that religion has been a huge contributor to violence since recorded time, but truthfully, it's not been the only one. The acquisition of land and wealth as well as ideas and politics have contributed as well. Without religion I think there would be less violence, but it does not account for all.

It would not be at peace, but at least people may have to take personal responsibility for their actions, instead of claiming it was done in the name of a religion/god.

no argument I'm curious how you arrive to these opinions attempting to separate causes and actions. No doubt that religion came via the people,so it would stand to reason that people and their religion are one.
I have just noticed that this thread is still going after nearly two years. Well done all who kept it going, i will have to read back now. This could take a while and maybe upset a few more people. To all.
Most wars have been a result of tribalism in the macro form ... ie nations (geo political or religions) On a micro scale you can see it amongst football clubs where the animosity occasionally leads to violence. It is usually a battle for territory or people's minds!

Well it might in Arizona where they are about to vote on SB1062 regarding gay people.
