My illegitimate uncle's wife traced the debauchery of his (our shared) lineage back to the 16th century but on my dad's side my nan wouldn't even tell us who her grandmother was. She thought genealogy in schools was a big conspiracy theory to uncover Germanic ancestry by Margaret Thatcher ... one of many conspiracy theories ...

Hi Annie....

Taking it all with a pinch of salt, on my mothers side, nothing outstanding...
On my fathers side....
James Ellis, one time hangman at the Tower of london...
Ruth Ellis, last woman to be hanged in England...
And just for closers, my eldest sister dated James Hanratty, just before he (supposedly) committed the A6 murders in the 1960s...

So, a cheery little lot in all, anyone fancy a date with me now?...

AB...laugh...

Oh remember reading about Ellis and all his little rituals and then the - was it Pointpierres after that or before?
Close call for your sister there so - even more perilous than internet dating....

I know so little about my dad or his family
My dad was born in 1915 and both my grandparents died in the late 50's early 60's
Its something I have always wondered about and up to very recently I thought my granny was an only child but turns out she had a sister and a brother wow

If you have names and an idea of birth dates you can start to find out quite easily but it is time consuming - especially if you have to find originals of parish records but I'd say it would be great to put the puzzle together.

I know when dad was born and as far as I am aware he was an only child.
I know when both grandparents died not totally sure about when they were born.

salanky: where can you find out about it?

best place to start is with your own family - put down all you know or think you do and then trawl around the long lost cousins and great aunts, look at old family photos.
There are loads of paid genealogy websites but you'd probably be able to find out loads without them initially.

D'ya know what Sal, ive not given it a thought much before Annies post, Ill take the time to read up on James Ellis's rituals a little later, as for weather he was before or after Albert Pierrepoint, i think he was before...
On the subject of Hanratty, My sis braught him back to the house a couple of times, sure, id just have been a toddler then, but the folks remarked on what a nice chap he seemed to be...
