Boban1: Göring: Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.

That seems to be the case. One word; authority

Just remember you are able to voice your opinions here because democracy has been protecetd by "Warmongers"
I served proudly to deter a war and it was a resounding success, we kept those that would do harm to innocent people at bay just by being present, without firing a shot,

True BUT I´d like to re-write here what I wrote in my last post. Might quicker if you scroll up a little.

To that last post I´ll add there would have been nothing to defend. No soldiers would be needed!!

EagleWoman: Are you saying that people who follow the directions and policies of people they might not agree with should be seen as heros just because they do that day in day out and put their life in danger for it?

There´s not many instences in life where THAT would be applauded... Why would killing others in the name of someone´s political agendas be one of them?

Not saying that at all. doh

Saying that being a soldier is far different situation wise than being a police officer or a fireman.wine

You are right ... most police officers put their life in danger everyday, to fight real crime rather than someone´s political agenda. And police officers who work undercover or are working on some big bust up DON´t get to go home at night to hug their families either wine

Firefighters do get to go home unless they work somewhere where there are a lot of forest fires ...

Your right and many of them were draft dodgers that fled to Canada, and in 1975 they were pardoned, and were rewarded $5000.00 to come back to the U.S. I went to fight in combat for what was right for me to do. We can all talk about how it could have been, but not until some are in it, you’ll never know what war and hell is like.cheers

I can only speak for myself, as an ex serviceman who managed to go where and when I was told for some 22 years. This included fighting Fires when the Firemen were on strike. Policing Stikers with an understrength police force. Being deployed for months and often years away from my family and I still have the scars physical and mental after seeing and doing the odd little thing most of you would never dream of in your worst nightmare.

Most of you know so little of what any serving member of the forces sees and does. I can say with certainty that the vast majority of you are talking complete and utter rubbish.

Few service folk consider themselves "HEROES" That is reserved for a very few. The rest of us do and did a nasty job at times that few of you actaully no sod all about.grin cheers

jJust a thought WWI had some casualties.

The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I was over 35 million. There were over 15 million deaths and 20 million wounded ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history.

The total number of deaths includes about 10 million military personnel and about 7 million civilians. The Entente Powers (also known as the Allies) lost about 6.0 million soldiers while the Central Powers lost about 4.0 million.

Lloyd George promised those who survived "Homes fit for heroes"

NEVER HAPPENED.

Then we had WWII.....Now that was even more advanced.

World War II fatality statistics vary, with estimates of total dead ranging from 50 million to over 70 million. The sources cited in this article document an estimated death toll in World War II of 62 to 78 million, making it the deadliest war in world history in absolute terms of total dead but not in terms of deaths relative to the world population.

When scholarly sources differ on the number of deaths in a country, a range of war losses is given, in order to inform readers that the death toll is disputed. Civilians killed totaled from 40 to 52 million, including 13 to 20 million from war-related disease and famine. Total military dead: from 22 to 25 million, including deaths in captivity of about 5 million prisoners of war.

And without all these service folk what language would you nice folks e speaking now??? German or Japanese.....You owe all these folk as I do a debt of gratitude..... But of course you have the right to say and believe as you like today....Why ? 'Cos these dead service folk paid for your rights with their lives....Do carry on using the right these folk gave you.

grin cheers

patmac: OK Take the former Yugoslavia. It was NATO's forces that stopped the indescriminate slaughter of how many folk by how many other folk.

It was an Armed Force of service folk who stopped civilians killing civilians.

And more recently the US Army in New Orleans.

The disaster that struck New Orleans and the southern Gulf Coast has given rise to the largest military mobilization in modern history on US soil. Nearly 65,000 US military personnel are now deployed in the disaster area, transforming the devastated port city into a war zone.

Squads of combat-equipped troops toting assault rifles and columns of humvees with gunners at the ready crisscross its flooded streets. Soldiers with bayonets mounted have begun house-to-house canvassing of the city to enforce the complete removal of its civilian population.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the disastrous delay in providing aid to the city’s beleaguered citizens was in large part a matter of waiting until this massive military force was ready to deploy.

With New Orleans under de facto martial law, its mayor, Ray Nagin, issued an order Tuesday for the forced evacuation of its remaining residents, estimated at anywhere between a few thousand and tens of thousands. New Orleans police officials indicated that they were prepared to forcibly drag people from their homes.

US military spokesmen initially said that they would support the operation, but claimed that uniformed soldiers would not participate directly in these evictions. But Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Inge, deputy commander of US Northern Command, told Pentagon reporters Wednesday that national guard units, which are formally under state control, could be used to compel people to leave.

If it was not for the SERVICE FOLK What would have happened???

Still think your rubbish aout Hiler is not worth a comment.

I must be thick

Why was it necessary to turn N.O. into a war zone and evict all its 10s of thousands of inhabitants? Why couldn´t aid have been sent to save lives? dunno
