Glatlol: Again all things that people know before they sign up.

Which makes them heroes. Cops and firefighters know that when the chips are down they can be pulled out PDQ.

just one little reminder, Pat, that the wars in former Yugoslavia weren't all stopped by NATO bombing. in Croatia it stopped when one side prevailed, in Bosnia it stopped by signing Dayton agreement , so there is a way.
NATO bombs were used to end the war in Kosovo.
but , ethnic cleansing was NOT over with it, you just didn't get to watch it on TV.
and about the matter of war in general, all i can say is that i am indefinitely happy that military service is no longer an obligation for our boys and my son will not have to take a weapon ever in his life. so i hope with all my heart.

Totally agree, I was an airman but I had to take my hat off to the Ground troops of the NATO forces who along with some some very brave locals did what they could to eliviate the problem....Shame it happened in the first place.

We in the UK do not and have not been obliged to serve in the forces since the early sixties. We had a completely volunteer professional set of forces. That makes a difference the lads and lasses who serve want to and are better trained and paid than our old National Service folk were. It is a career for many. So you get folk who are more professional that is always a bonus....No one to my mind should be forced or made to serve. The life does not suit all and that causes problems all round. Glad to hear you lad does not have to go unlike so many before him....grin cheers

venusenvy: I cant stand warmongers let alone glorifying war...I would say the true heroes in society are the people that really put their life on the line everyday, like Firefighters or Police officers. Someone like Nelson Mandela will always be a far bigger hero to me than all the so-called war heroes put together.

If you knew what a combat zone is about, i wouldn't blab off my mouth. You damn sure don't make any sense in my book.devil

Glatlol: Are people not given a choice about whether or not they join the armed forces?

Here in the USA, there is no draft which means people join of their own free will. My youngest son is one of those who joined knowing full well he could be sent somewhere to fight. Right now he's going into his fourth or fifth week at Parris Island SC as a Marine recruit.
Does it scare me that he may end up in a battle zone some day? Damn right it does but I am proud of my son for giving his time to his country.

HOORAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
