serene56: Serene thinks the Australian populace should ban politicians
and to think politicians are people, what is the secret ingredient that gives a politician a different personality implant?
Me thinks it's something to do with having to suck up to as many people as you can to get onto the front bench.

Well after the Pub crawl today I feel a lot better about the beard. I had it out in all its glory instead of plaited and I got compliments all day and even a couple of ladies wanting to run their fingers through it.

jem1964: I always thought that beards werent encouraged in the force anyway, even mo's had to be approved at one stage.

Does that mean they will ban them for uncover officers as well?

A well kept beard in my opinion can look great on a fella, but if it is unkempt and dirty it is a real turn off

Perhaps women then could go to clinics for extra estrogen and testosterone shots and grow beards to really cause problems for the police...laugh ("Stand By Your Man" song in the background)

Not really sure what the fuss is about. Police used to be not allowed to grow beards. In the sixties in the navy we had to apply for permission to grow a beard (actually to stop shaving) and then again permission to shave off later. Army and airforce were only allowed moustache. No problem, just part of the discipline.

I think that this is silly and petty.
I cannot see anything wrong with a beard on a policeman, provided that it is kept short and tidy. The reason for it to be short is so that it is not long enough for someone to grab during a fight. In the world of martial arts that is why short hair and short beards are the norm. Long hair (wherever it is) is something that your opponent can grab.
In the world of sales and politicis, it is generally considered to be a negative to have a beard.
While a beard is entirely natural for a man, in Western society it has become associated with people who are lazy, dishonest, untrustworthy, etc. The hippies of the 1960s and 1970s did not help.

Glad you said generally. Richard Branson has a beard. Arab Oil Shieks have beards. Darren Hinch has a beard.

I have had a beard for most of the last 40 years, shaved for a few years after I had a tumor removed while waiting for the after affects to go away. During my beard and long hair time, I have worked in retail and real estate without any problems. Retail meant people saw me as just another person, and 20 years later people would still stop me in the streets to say hello. Even ran into a couple out the back of Bourke where they remembered me all those years later.

Okay, I also worked in real estate where it is well know that everyone is dishonest and untrustworthy. Team of 5 sales people and I still managed to do 50% of sales. Probably most successful because I would try to find the right home for the people, and point out all the faults along the way. Not just make a sale. Ultimately, it was their choice.
