Here's the question - If you knew for sure that by not using a microwave oven ever again that you could prolong your life for 10 years.

I just boiled water in the microwave to make coffee and while the microwave was on I thought to myself how much longer it would take to boil it on the stove.

This isn't about having proof that radiation causes cancer and to be fair, I have attached a link that speaks of the possibility of a hazard.

This is about how much we thrive on convenience every day, in our hectic lives, to get one more thing done.

So dear CS members... would you give up the convenience of a microwave oven.....a product that makes your life so much easier on a daily basis, if you knew for sure that if you NEVER used it again you would extend your life another 10 years...wine

Hi Monte wave if I knew for sure I might would. Most likely would. But I cannot help but to think of all the other cancer scares we have had in my short time. First something is bad for you and then it is good for you. But I do not smoke and I watch my food in take all from the health perspective so I am unsure. I really do not use my microwave often. It is a standing joke in my area. I sill own and use the first microwave I ever owned. Got it eighteen years ago. Still works goodthumbs up Don't think I would replace it if it went. But my daughter did not think so either so she got me another one. It sits in my closet waiting to be called for duty. uh oh

It will most likely be on my tomb stone died from terminal good healthuncertain

Hi Happy wave Sounds like you're saying....I might give it up or maybe I'll give it up.

I know there are many other things that could shorten our lives but I want to focus on the microwave.

It's very hard to give up something that's been a part of your life for many years. I've heard where smokers you had lung cancer got a new lung and continued to smoke. People who get gastric bypass surgery for weight loss continue to eat junk food.

Habits and convenience are often the rule of the day..

I know a man who talks through a machine and has a hole in his throat that still smokes wow so yes I agree I think it is how much one finds the importance of it. If it had been my computer I would of said when you pry it out of my dead hands. It is like a large purse to me. My recipes my comunication needs most are done by computer but some can do without them with ease. I have never owned a dish washer either. I see though what you are saying. So yes I think it depends on the person and the device and with you it is the micro wave. wave

Not had mocriwave oven or TV in years. Don't own many electrical appliances either. I use an electric hand held liquidizer, a vacum cleaner and a washing machine. That's it!! In the winter, sometimes I don't even use my cooker. I cook my food on the open fire in the livingroom!! Yummy!!

I do have a lappy and a printer but then I use them for working from home. And a few electric tools because I'm doing up my house.

Would love to have solar pannels on my roof so don't have to buy electricity! grin

Let me give you some information about your microwaves. I don't have one personally and i don't use them unless i have no choice. Cell phones work with microwaves. Put your cell phone in the microwave and don't start it, try to call your cell phone, if your cell phone rings then your microwave is leaking microwave rays and is exposing you to microwave rays, If i doesn't then is good to go. The microwave rays are not suppose to escape from the microwave oven.

Okay, thanks for the suggestion but I don't want to take a chance on my cell phone being destroyed.

And there's an example.....do I do the test you suggested to see if my microwave is safe at the risk of destroying my cell phone, or do I gample that it is safe in order to keep my cell phone safe...Today's dilemma. Thanks alot...rolling on the floor laughing hug

You don't *start* the microwave Monte... laugh

radiation isn't suppose to get in, or out of a microwave oven when the door is closed. The test suggested, is just to see if the signal (from the cell phone tower) gets into the microwave oven with the door closed... if it DOES... then the radiation from the microwave is also assumed to be getting out. (I *assume* that both the microwave, and the cell phone, use the same, or similar, technology???)

Conclusion : If the cell phone rings when placed inside a closed microwave oven... replace, or get rid of, the microwave

thanks! that's really interesting and will try it.
but first i have to be somewhere where there's a microwave oven..lol

i do have one, but my things are in storage.

to the OP:
most of my friends have stopped using microwaves; either they were old and were not replaced, or they didn't have one to begin with. i am guilty of using it to heat up coffee and rarely use it otherwise. it's becoming more popular here to not have one. again, not speaking for everyone...but in my last place, an artist co-operative of 42 lofts, most folks did not have or use one. most friends here switched to counter ovens years ago due to speculation on leaking radiation.
