From what I hear the mines are asking for 'experience' which a lot of people might be qualified, whether it is electricans, pipe fitters etc. but don't have 'mining experience'?? dunno

So it is a Catch 22 situation, how do I get experience if you won't give me a job?? confused

That was the argument last week in the papers until they worked out that the o/seas workers don't need any experience and that they would be trained in scaffolding and crane operations

We'll need to import lots of bamboo and string so they can build scaffolding the way they are used to.

It sounds primitive but is just as safe and a very strong building material, but I'm guessing it will be steel bars instead of bamboo poles

Sometimes employers need reminding...It reminds me of when I was 15. I was at an all girls school and DJ's would traditionally select from the final year girls for their summer holiday work. That year, our entire class attended interviews. It came to my turn and I was called in, with me wearing my winter uniform, complete with gloves. The 30 something male across the room asked me at one point: "And what experience do you have?" Well, I might have been only 15 but I could tell a stupid question when I heard it. So I blurted out..."I'm only 15. What experience could I possibly have. That's why I've come here, so I can get experience!"...Well, I must have impressed him with my bluntness as, apart from one other student, I was the only one he selected out of the entire class of about 30 girls!!dunno...Boy, did I cop it from the others. They couldn't accept that some non-Anglo Saxon immigrant gal could land a job and not them, asking me who did I know??doh

Moral of the story is, don't be afraid to speak up and push for a crack at whatever job you want. It's always up to you to make a good argument. Often, you can learn some of the technical stuff, as long as you have some nouse to be trained.

That's fantastic Venere! I have heard it a lot from 'young' people trying to enter the workforce - they are told they don't have any 'experience', they might have the qualifications/certificates but they don't have the elusive EXPERIENCE - so how can they get this experience if no one will give them a go??

And yes as far as the mining jobs go, if a person has the right qualifications and experience in other fields/businesses then surely it should be simple for them to transfer their skills to mining?? Even with a bit of cross over training?

Or do the mining companies really not want them - and want imported workers who are more likely to accept less pay and conditions??? confused Oh and one other thing, australians might have better language skills than imported workers who might come from a country where English is a second language???

I work with a varied lot of origins where English is the 2nd or 3rd language. But it is the work skills that are most important. Some have good English but are bloody hopeless at doing the job (or it is not my job) while some have serious communication problems but are great at doing the job.

I do agree with give locals preference for jobs but it should be the best person for the job. Hate where it says "must be...." as they are not considering the best for the job.
